Safe Ways to Address Chronic Pain

Safe Ways to Address Chronic Pain

They range from bio-photon (light) therapy to liposomal Vitamin C & hemp oils

By Tom Cowan, M.D.

Soon after I moved to California, almost 15 years ago, I received a notice saying that all physicians in California needed to take and pass a course on pain management to renew their license.  The motivation behind this initiative, we were told, was that pain syndromes were left unrecognized and inadequately treated in the U.S. to an alarming degree.  We were told that because of new drugs, physicians now could see to it that no person was left to suffer with chronic pain.

About a month ago, I took a follow-up class largely devoted to the state of pain management in 2018.  We learned that as a result of the initiatives to effectively treat patients with pain, mostly with newer opiate medicines, at least tens of thousands of people died.  Countless other people have had their lives devastated as a result of chronic opiate use, benzodiazepine use (medicines such as Valium, Librium, Xanax, etc.), or the deadly combination of opiates and “benzos.”

Physicians, encouraged by pharmaceutical companies, created what many call an epidemic of tragic proportions, not only for the individuals whose health was undermined through chronic medication use, but also for their families and communities.  We even heard that a new study indicated that the chronic use of prescription sleeping pills, which an extraordinary percentage of older Americans uses, dramatically increases the all-cause mortality rate.  The course was designed to alert us to the dangers  these drugs cause and to teach us how to “safely” and “legally” prescribe them.

Most of the doctors in the room were older practitioners, most in solo or small-group practices; in other words, part of the dying breed.  The sense of despair and futility in the room was palpable, as these men and women were aware that, given the constraints of their practices, they have no effective way to comply with the regulations concerning opiate prescriptions.  Perhaps more important, most have no clue what to tell their patients who are in pain, as they have no other tools in their toolbox besides pharmaceutical medicines.   All they know is how to prescribe drugs, and yet it is crystal clear that these substances are literally killing people.  This is clearly a horrible situation for these doctors and the patients who rely on them for their care.

This entire situation was brought home to me last year when I watched an interview with the Golden State Warriors basketball head coach, Steve Kerr.  Kerr had to quit work for weeks because of chronic pain from leakage of spinal fluid during back surgery.  When describing what he was going through, he made two clear points: That if he had it to do over again, he would not have had the back surgery, and that he was not willing to take opiates, having seen the devastation this had caused to friends and colleagues.   Given the intense nature and physical traumas that professional athletes routinely experience, I can only imagine the extent of the use of opiates and other pharmaceuticals.

Anti-inflammatory drugs, which have been linked to chronic kidney disease and heart disease, are also not the solution.  For someone like Steve Kerr to go public with his distrust of the strategies offered to him by top doctors underscores how widespread this problem is.

I don’t have the answer to the

treatment of chronic pain, but I can offer suggestions that have helped many of my patients.  First, pain is not the diagnosis. Even if you receive the diagnosis “chronic regional pain syndrome,” pain is a symptom, or a way your body is communicating that something is wrong.  The answer to what is wrong varies; it could be an acute injury, such as a fracture, or it could be a chronic condition, such as migraine headaches.  In either case, the place to start is to have a thorough evaluation to see whether the source can be identified.

Once the evaluation has been done, and in many cases, no actual diagnosis can be found, a number of pain-relief strategies can be tried.  None work as quickly or as profoundly as opiates at getting rid of pain, but they lack opiates’ dangerous effects.

As always, the place to start is with diet and movement.  Many people’s pain is a result of arthritis, inflamed soft tissues (tendonitis, bursitis, etc.) or simply weakness of the muscular-skeletal system.  A “Nourishing Traditions”-type diet and a combination of strength training, stretching, and either walking or swimming will help most people live healthier, more pain-free lives.  If you are not used to exercising, finding a personal trainer to guide you can be a wise investment.

The next modality I employ with many people with chronic pain, especially muscular-skeletal in origin, is the bio-photon or light therapy we use in the office.  The theory and practice of bio-photon therapy is simple.  A heat-sensing camera finds spots of congestion and inflammation, and different wavelengths of light, including far-infrared, are directed to these areas.  The light exposure increases blood flow and improves cellular function and detoxification.  The pain is not just blocked; the areas treated actually get healthier.  Many of our patients report significant improvement after about six sessions of 15 minutes each, two to three times a week.  Nothing is injected, and no side effects of any sort occur.

The treatment of pain almost always involves improving blood flow and detoxification.  Oral medicines that help include liposomal vitamin C and glutathione, both of which improve detoxification; siliplant, an organic silica preparation for improving the strength and elasticity of the joints and muscles; and the anti-inflammatory herbs boswellia (in photo above) and turmeric.

The liposomal preparations, particularly those made by an innovative company called Quicksilver Scientific, means they put the desired substances in a tiny fat bubble (made from non-GMO sunflower oil), which  ferries the nutrient into the blood stream.  Using this type of preparation, we are able to obtain blood levels of glutathione (sometimes called the master detoxifier) and vitamin C that were previously obtainable only through IV use. Another useful liposomal preparation from Quicksilver is high-potency hemp oil.  Hemp oil is rich in non-psychoactive cannabidiols, which often provide effective pain relief.  Other helpful interventions include massage therapy, osteopathy and acupuncture.

We do have safe options for the treatment of chronic pain.  Except in rare cases, and then only acutely or for end-stage cancer pain, the current pharmaceutical approach should be our last resort.

Easy Keto Diet That Controls Epilepsy

Plus 3 Simple Recipes That Will Also Help You Lose Weight

In a nutshell the ketogenic diet is a high-fat, adequate-protein, low-carbohydrate diet. The diet forces the body to burn fats rather than carbohydrates.

Normally, the carbohydrates contained in food are converted into glucose, which is then transported around the body and is particularly important in fueling brain-function. However, when there is little carbohydrate in the diet,
the liver converts fat into fatty acids and “ketone bodies.” The ketone bodies are three molecules; acetone, acetoacetic acid and beta-hydroxybutyric acid, which during a keto diet will pass into the brain and replace glucose as an energy source. This is why people who practice a keto diet will report weight loss and experiencing more energy.

A ketogenic diet can also aid with treating some health issues including epilepsy.

What can you eat on a keto diet? Healthy fats:

  • Hemp seeds
  • Chia seeds
  • Avocado
  • Coconut Oil especially MCT coconut oil
  • MCT powder
  • Olive Oil
  • Nuts: almonds, brazil nuts, cashews, macadamia nuts, pecans, pistachios, walnuts
  • Seeds: chia seeds, flax seeds, hemp seeds, pumpkin seeds, sesame seeds

PAGE 1

• Organic Grass Fed Cheese

Protein:

  • Seafood. Fish and shellfish are very keto-friendly foods.
  • Organic Meat and Poultry.
  • Free range or pasture raised Eggs.

Non-starchy low-carb vegetables:

• Keto diet focuses on low carb vegetables. Consuming one serving of “starchy”

vegetables like potatoes, beets or yams could put you over your entire carb limit

for the day while on the Keto Diet.

  • Low-carb veggies can make great substitutes for higher-carb foods. For example, spaghetti squash and “zoodles” can be created from zucchini to replace wheat &spaghetti; cauliflower can be used to mimic rice or mashed potatoes.
  • You can eat as much leafy greens as you like including asparagus, cucumber, and zucchini while on the Keto Diet.
  • Broccoli
  • Cauliflower
  • Cucumber
  • Zucchini
  • Asparagus
  • Mushrooms
  • Zucchini
  • Spinach
  • Bell Peppers

page3image12065072

PAGE 2

Fruits:

  • Avocado
  • Blackberries
  • Blueberries
  • Raspberries

• Strawberries

Most fruits are too high in carbs to include on a ketogenic diet, but berries are an

exception.

Drinks:

page4image7992864

  • Unsweetened coffee & tea
  • Bone broth

Condiments:

  • Herbs and spices
  • Unsweetened mustard

Snacks:

  • Avocado with hemp seeds and lemon juice
  • Guacamole with celery or cucumber sticks
  • Shirataki Noodles
  • Olives
  • Organic Plain Greek Yogurt and Cottage Cheese.
  • Dark chocolate/cacao powder sweetened with stevia

For the vegan/vegetarian:

Here’s an easy guide to a vegan ketogenic diet.
“I’m not going to lie to you, it is absolutely tougher to be vegan or vegetarian on aketogenic diet, but it is possible. You need to focus on two important groups tomaintain a vegetarian ketogenic diet: proteins and fats.” Mark Hyman, M.D.

Sources of vegetarian protein include:

  • Tofu and tempeh
  • Nuts and seeds
  • Eggs (if you’re not vegan)

Sources of plant-based fats:

  • Organic extra-virgin olive oil
  • Organic virgin coconut oil
  • Macadamia nut oil
  • Avocado oil
  • Grass-fed ghee (if you’re not vegan)
  • Avocados
  • Olives

Fun facts about the keto diet and how it is used for epilepsy:
The keto diet is being used in medicine to primarily treat difficult-to-controlepilepsy in children. “An elevated level of ketone bodies in the blood, a state

known as ketosis, leads to a reduction in the frequency of epileptic seizures. Almost half of children, and young people, with epilepsy who have tried some form of this diet saw the number of seizures drop by at least half, and the effect persists even after discontinuing the diet. The original therapeutic diet

for paediatric epilepsy provides just enough protein for body growth and repair,

PAGE 6

and sufficient calories to maintain the correct weight for age and height.”
By Chukwuma Muanya (Assistant Editor) and Stanley Akpunonu The Guardian The classic therapeutic ketogenic diet was developed for treatment of pediatric epilepsy in the 1920s and was widely used into the next decade. This classic ketogenic diet contains a 4:1 ratio by weight of fat to combined protein and carbohydrate. This is achieved by excluding high-carbohydrate foods such as starchy fruits and vegetables, bread, pasta, grains and sugar, while increasing the

consumption of foods high in fat such as nuts, cream, and butter. Most dietary fat is made of molecules called long-chain triglycerides (LCTs). However, medium- chain triglycerides (MCTs)—made from fatty acids with shorter carbon
chains than LCTs—are more ketogenic. A variant of the classic diet known as the MCT ketogenic diet uses a form of coconut oil, which is rich in MCTs, to provide around half the calories. Clinical trials and studies in animal models (including C. elegans) suggest that ketogenic diets provide neuroprotective and disease- modifying benefits for a number of adult neurodegenerative disorders. What is Leaky Gut Syndrome?

What is Leaky Gut Syndrome?

LGS Cycle wide
Leaky Gut Syndrome is the name given to a very common health disorder in which the intestinal lining is more permeable than normal. The abnormally large spaces present between the cells of the gut wall allow the entry of toxic material into the bloodstream that would, in healthier circumstances, be repelled and eliminated.

The gut becomes “leaky” in the sense that bacteria, viruses, fungi, parasites and their toxins, undigested foods such as proteins, nerve and connective tissue, fat and waste normally not absorbed into the bloodstream in the healthy state, pass through a damaged, hyper-permeable, porous or “leaky” gut. Colostrum is the only substance that can close the holes in the intestinal lining.
When mammals are born, they have a “leaky gut” by design. The gut has not matured at birth, even if full-term, and complete development doesn’t occur until the growth factors and other components in colostrum are ingested. Epithelial growth factor (EGF) is particularly important in closing the holes in the gastrointestinal lining. However, before the holes are closed, larger proteins, such as the immunolglobulins, are able to easily enter the body, thereby achieving passive immunity from the mother.

How is Leaky Gut Syndrome diagnosed?
Leaky Gut Syndrome can be verified by special gut permeability urine tests, microscopic examination of the lining of the intestinal wall as well as the bloodstream with phase contrast or dark field microscopy of living whole blood, and food allergy testing. However, lifestyle examination can provide a quicker and simpler diagnosis. Anyone who experiences food or airborne allergies; has a gastro-intestinal condition such as Irritable Bowel Syndrome, heartburn, Crohn’s disease; or has an auto immune disease such as fibromyalgia, asthma, arthritis, multiple sclerosis, etc., has Leaky Gut Syndrome.

What causes Leaky Gut Syndrome?
Leaky Gut Syndrome is basically caused by inflammation of the gut lining. This inflammation is usually brought about by the following:
•    Antibiotics (lead to the overgrowth of abnormal flora in the gastrointestinal tract – bacteria, parasites, candida, and fungi)
•    NSAIDS (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) such as aspirin, ibuprofen, Vicodin, and other prescription pain medications
•    Alcohol and caffeine (strong gut irritants)
•    Gluten and other proteins from wheat
•    Mold and fungal mycotoxins in stored grains, fruit and refined carbohydrates
•    Foods and beverages contaminated by parasites like giardia lamblia, cryptosporidium, blastocystis hominis and others
•    Foods and beverages contaminated by bacteria such as helicobacter pylori, klebsiella, citrobacter, pseudomonas and others
•    Chemicals in fermented and processed food (dyes, preservatives, peroxidized fats)
•    Enzyme deficiencies (e.g. celiac disease, lactase deficiency causing lactose intolerance)
•    Prescription corticosteroids (e.g. prednisone)
•    Highly refined carbohydrate diet (e.g. candy bars, cookies, cake, soft drinks, white bread)
•    Prescription hormones such as birth control pills

Broad spectrum prescription antibiotics are the primary cause of Leaky Gut Syndrome. Antibiotics wipe out all the friendly gut bacteria that otherwise provide protection against fungi and amoebic infections, help the body break down complex foods, and synthesize vitamins such as B12 and biotin. Since this friendly bowel flora is killed off, the body now has no local defense against the parasites or fungi that are normally held in check. This then causes an inflammatory reaction leading to Leaky Gut Syndrome. More recently, antibiotics in the food and water supply have become a concern and a contributing factor in bacteria-resistance (“super bugs”), particularly in non-hospital acquired MRSA.

What does Leaky Gut Syndrome do to the body?

Allergies & Autoimmune Conditions
Leaky Gut Syndrome is almost always associated with allergies and autoimmune conditions. Halting and reversing autoimmune diseases depends on healing the lining of the gastrointestinal tract. Any other treatment is just symptom suppression. An autoimmune disease is defined as one in which the immune system makes antibodies against its own tissues. Diseases in this category include rheumatoid arthritis, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, diabetes, lupus, alopecia areata, polymyalgia rheumatica, multiple sclerosis, Sjogren’s syndrome, scleroderma, vitiligo, thyroiditis, vasculitis, Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, urticaria (hives), Alzheimer’s and Reynaud’s disease. Physicians are increasingly recognizing the importance of the gastrointestinal tract in the development of allergic or autoimmune diseases. Understanding the leaky gut phenomenon not only helps explain how allergies and autoimmune diseases develop but also helps develop safe and effective therapies to bring the body back into balance.
Due to the enlarged spaces or holes between the cells of the gut wall, larger than usual protein molecules are absorbed before they have a chance to be completely broken down, which otherwise occurs when the intestinal lining is intact. The immune system begins treating the protein molecules as if they are foreign, invading substances which must be destroyed. Antibodies are produced against these previously harmless food substances.
Human tissues have antigenic sites very similar to those on foods, bacteria, parasites, candida or fungi. The antibodies created by the leaky gut phenomenon against these antigens can get into various tissues and trigger an inflammatory reaction when the corresponding food is consumed or the microbe is encountered. Auto antibodies are thus created, and inflammation becomes chronic. If this inflammation occurs in a joint, autoimmune arthritis (rheumatoid arthritis) develops. If it occurs in the brain, myalgic encephalomyelitis (a.k.a. chronic fatigue syndrome) may be the result. If it occurs in the blood vessels, vasculitis (inflammation of the blood vessels) is the resulting autoimmune problem. If the antibodies end up attacking the lining of the gut itself, the result may be colitis or Crohn’s disease. If it occurs in the lungs, asthma is triggered on a delayed basis every time the individual consumes the food which triggered the production of the antibodies in the first place. It is easy to see that practically any organ or body tissue can become affected by food allergies created by the leaky gut. Symptoms, especially those seen in conditions such as chronic fatigue syndrome, can be multiple and severely debilitating.
In addition to the creation of food allergies by the leaky gut, the bloodstream is invaded by bacteria, fungi and parasites that, in the healthy state, would not penetrate the protective barrier of the gut. These microbes and their toxins, if present in large enough amounts, can overwhelm the liver’s ability to detoxify. This results in symptoms such as confusion, memory loss, brain fog or facial swelling when the individual Is exposed to a perfume or to cigarette smoke that he or she had no adverse reactions to prior to the development of Leaky Gut Syndrome.

Nutrient Deficiencies
Leaky Gut Syndrome also creates a long list of mineral deficiencies because the various carrier proteins present in the gastrointestinal tract that are needed to transport minerals from the intestine to the blood are damaged by the inflammation process. For example, magnesium deficiency (low red blood cell magnesium) is quite a common finding in conditions like fibromyalgia despite a high magnesium intake through the diet and supplementation. If the carrier protein for magnesium is damaged, magnesium deficiency develops as a result of mal-absorption. Muscle pain and spasms can occur as a result. Similarly, zinc deficiency due to mal-absorption can result in hair loss or baldness as occurs in alopecia areata. Copper deficiency can occur in an identical way leading to high blood cholesterol levels and osteoarthritis. Further, bone problems develop as a result of the mal-absorption of calcium, boron, silicon and manganese.

Irritable Bowel Syndrome
The mainstream thinking on IBS is that it is caused by stress. Irritable Bowel Syndrome is the number one reason for general practitioner referrals to specialists. In well over 80% of the cases, tests like the intestinal permeability test (a special urine test involving the determination of absorption rates of two sugars called lactulose and mannitol), CDSA or live cell dark field microscopy reveal the presence of an overgrowth of fungi, parasites or pathogenic bacteria. The one-celled parasite, blastocystis hominis and different species of candida are the most common microbes seen in IBS. The only stress associated with IBS is that which is generated by infection and the Leaky Gut Syndrome. If allowed to persist without the correct treatment, IBS can progress into more serious disorders like the candidiasis syndrome, multiple chemical sensitivities, Fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, many autoimmune diseases and even cancer. If treated medically, IBS is rarely cured. To treat it correctly, natural treatments work best and must include the removal of the cause, improvement of gastrointestinal function and healing the lining of the gut.

Heart Disease
The inflammation that causes Leaky Gut Syndrome also damages the protective coating of antibodies of the immunoglobulin IGG and IGA family normally present in a healthy gut. Since immunoglobulins normally help ward off infections, a leaky gut leads to less resistance against viruses, bacteria, parasites and candida. These microbes are then able to invade the bloodstream and colonize almost any body tissue or organ. When this occurs in the gums, periodontal disease results and heart disease follows with infection of arterial walls. Gingivitis-causing bacteria “eats” holes in the arterial walls of the cardiovascular system which are subsequently “patched” up with cholesterol. An accumulation of cholesterol plaques leads to an increased risk of heart disease and stroke; arteries can become blocked which restricts blood flow to vital organs, or pieces of plaque can break off and lodge in an artery, thereby completely blocking blood flow.
Can Leaky Gut Syndrome be reversed?
Band-aid treatments with corticosteroids, prescription antibiotics and immuno suppressive drugs may be temporarily life-saving for acute episodes of pain, bleeding or severe inflammation as occurs in Crohn’s disease, lupus or colitis. In the long run, however, none of these treatments do anything to heal the leaky gut problem. To reverse Leaky Gut Syndrome, the diet must be completely changed to one which is as hypoallergenic as possible. Sugar, white flour products, all gluten-containing grains (especially wheat, barley, oats and rye), milk and dairy products, high fat foods, caffeine products, alcohol and hidden food allergies determined by testing must all be eliminated for long periods of time (several years in the most severe cases) or until the leaky gut process is stopped and repaired and overall GI health is restored.

Bovine Colostrum
Treatment for Leaky Gut Syndrome should begin with bovine colostrum, specifically one that is standardized to contain high levels of immunoglobulins, lactoferrin, PRPs, growth factors and that has a protective and delivery mechanism such as liposomal delivery with phospholipid coatings to protect the colostrum from digestion and ensure it can deliver the nutrients and anti-pathogenic action of colostrum to the cells in the lining of the intestine. Published peer review studies with colostrum show its unique ability to eliminate and prevent infections of all types and help eliminate the attendant inflammation. It has also been clinically proven to prevent and heal Leaky Gut Syndrome in human trials conducted at the Royal Hospital in London. It is the only substance to provide these proven benefits. With appropriate colostrum use, it is rare that prescription drugs for these infections and inflammation would be necessary and should thus, be discouraged. The drugs are usually expensive, have unpleasant side effects (including prolonging and acerbating the disease causes) and are best reserved for life-threatening conditions.

Immunoglobulins and Lactoferrin
Both substances are found in significant amounts in colostrum and show inhibitory activity against viruses and bacteria within the body. This action can be important in autoimmune diseases, as many autoimmune disorders are triggered or worsened by viral or bacterial invaders. Lactoferrin restores the humoral immune response, which is an immune response that is mediated by T and B cells. Lactoferrin is shown to minimize viral and bacterial infections, especially in immuno-compromised patients, which can thereby reduce potential triggers for autoimmune conditions. Lactoferrin also inhibits the production of local proinflammatory cytokines, TNF-α and interleukin 1-β. To limit the inflammatory response is important in many autoimmune conditions, as the inflammation creates pain and complications.

Proline-rich Polypeptides (PRPs)
Also known as Colostrinin, PRPs are powerful immune modulators which can help tone down the overactive immune response found in autoimmune diseases. PRPs act by preventing the overproduction of lymphocytes and stimulating the production of helper and suppressor T cells.

Growth Factors
Various types of growth factors in colostrum help repair the damage of autoimmune diseases. Epithelial growth factor (EGF) may help reverse the destruction of skin cells that can occur with lupus and other autoimmune diseases. Transforming growth factor (TGF), found in two forms in colostrum, can help reverse protein breakdown and stimulate tissue repair. Insulin-like growth factor (IGF-1) can help stimulate glucose transport in diabetic patients.
Colostrum’s growth factors have anti-inflammatory action and also help repair damaged cells in the lining of the gastrointestinal tract, which decreases cellular spacing and prevents further leakage of toxins into body. Research has shown that EGF can help grow and repair intestinal tissue. So, unlike other therapies, colostrum is the only known natural substance that has the capability of healing the GI tract and preventing it from becoming too permeable. Thus, colostrum may have the potential to slow or stop the progression of an autoimmune disease that progresses as a result of Leaky Gut Syndrome.

Cytokines and Infopeptides
Cytokines are hormone-like proteins that have been shown to mediate many vital biological processes, including inflammation. Cytokines achieve this by regulating the intensity and duration of the immune response and mediating cell-to-cell communication. Cytokines also help increase T-cell activity and stimulate production of immunoglobulins.  Infopeptides, a protein derivative, reduce inflammation as well as allow the immune system to reorient and correct its response mechanism against autoimmune disease processes. Clinical observations of the effects of infopeptides in humans show reductions in inflammation, edema, pain and fever apparently regardless of cause.
Leaky Gut Syndrome patients can help themselves by taking bovine colostrum; chewing food more thoroughly; following the basic rules of food combining; eating frequent small meals rather than three large ones; taking more time eating meals; and taking digestive enzymes to improve digestion. Gastrointestinal function can be further improved with a juice fast and a hypoallergenic diet and supplements.

Beneficial Supplements
First and foremost is bovine colostrum with protective Liposomal Delivery. Additional supplementation benefits can be found from: natural digestive enzymes; lactobacillus acidophilus and biffidus as well as FOS (fructooligosacharides) derived from Jerusalem artichoke, chicory, the dahlia plant or burdock root; aloe vera juice with a high MPS concentration; stomach acidity enhancing supplements – betain and pepsin, stomach bitters, apple vinegar amino acids;  L-glutamine, N-acetyl-glucosamine (NAG) Omega 3 essential fatty acids – milled flax seed, flax seed oil, evening primrose oil, borage oil, olive oil, fish oils, black currant seed oil; soluble fiber – apple or citrus pectin;  carotenoids, vitamin B complex (especially B-12, 6 and biotin), vitamin C, E, zinc, selenium, germanium, antioxidants such as Coenzyme Q10, pycnogenols, grape seed extract, pine bark extract, bilberry;  bioflavonoids, especially quercetin, catechin, hesperidins, rutin and proanthocyanidins; various high chlorophyll containing green drinks that provide spirulina, chlorella and blue green algae, burdock, slippery elm, licorice root, ginger root, bismuth and bentonite.

Conclusion
Bovine colostrum may potentially slow or stop the progression of autoimmune diseases by healing injury in the gastrointestinal tract and eliminating the leaky gut connection to the specific disease. Research provides evidence of the powerful immune and growth components in colostrum which can regulate the overactive immune response, help repair damaged cells, and reduce inflammation which is characteristic of autoimmune diseases.

Keto Salts and Keto Tone Diet

http://healthyketonediet.com/?sub_id=1033&s2=107831&s3=102e9fccd50bd8a9450654eedabb8f

We had to know more about exactly what this Keto Tone Diet was all about and how it worked. We had never heard of it before, but now we were intrigued. After clearing it with our legal team, our lead editor pushed for a case study. Our eager new reporter Alice Clemmens was more than happy to be our guinea-pig. She was assigned the task of trying this celebrity diet and documenting all of it for the next 31 days.

Before she started, we needed to make sure this was the right Keto Tone Diet product. Our insider had warned us that 90% of all Keto Tone Diet products are less than 30% Keto , the rest are edible fillers. After days of research, we found Keto Tone Diet to be the top choice on Amazon. With over 4,000 positive comments and an overall rating of 4.9, we were sold. We were about to purchase it when we realized that the Keto suppliers are currently offering exclusive LIMITED TIME DISCOUNTS to our readers! (More Information Below)

The secret behind Keto Tone Diet is its ability to suppress the appetite and increase the speed of your metabolism, while turning your body into a virtual fat burning machine.

Why is Keto Tone Diet so effective?

Keto Tone Dietcontains the naturally occurring ingredients, Keto Salts, which force the body into a constant state of Ketosis. Ketosis is a natural process the body initiates to help us survive when food intake is low. During this state, we produce ketones, which are produced from the breakdown of fats in the liver. By putting your body into Ketosis, it is constantly buring carbs and fat for energy.

Keto Tone Diet have been clinically proven to:

  • Increase the speed of metabolism by 70%
  • Stops the production of gluose and fat producing cells by 150%
  • Help the body burn fat as energy instead of storing it
  • Rich in antioxidants and serotonin, boosting energy levels
  • Reduce levels of Cortisol (the stress hormone) to improve mental health
  • Helps protect and regenerates brain function and the nervouse system

For our Case Study, we ordered a LIMITED TIME DISCOUNT of Keto Tone Diet. Suppliers are now offering SPECIAL RISK FREE DISCOUNT to our readers. (See below for exclusive links)

Three days later Keto Tone Diet was delivered. Below are my results… They are interesting to say the least!

My Results – I lost 28 lbs of stomach fat in just one month using the Keto Tone Diet, I look and feel great! – Alice Clemmens (Ok!)

What did we do?
1. Took one Keto Tone Diet pill in the morning. Making sure to drink lots of water throughout the day.
2. Took one Keto Tone Diet in the evening.
Week 1
It’s Day 7 of taking Keto Tone Diet. When I started I weighed 162 pounds. I’m at 155 after 7 days, but that’s most likely water weight that I lost, and some fat burned. However, I feel the impact that it’s made. I feel so much more energetic. I usually crash around 3PM at work and feel lazy and that has completely disappeared at this point.
Week 2
It’s Day 14, I got on the scale and weigh 145. 10 more pounds gone. I’ve lost over 17 pounds in 14 days so far, but again the first 10 pounds are usually water weight. I do feel less stress and I noticed I don’t twist and turn in bed anymore. I feel more energetic in the mornings as well.
Week 3
Its Day 18 of the Keto Tone Diet diet. Before I even got on the scale I noticed my pants were looser than usual. The scale said 142. I haven’t weighed less than 145 ever since I got married. I’ve even got a couple compliments by co-workers and friends! At this point I know the diet works, but the 35 pound claims by people on amazon may be difficult to achieve. We’ll see in the next few weeks.
Week 4
It’s Day 28 and I weigh 136. I definitely cut down on my sugar intake this week. There is still 4 more days, I’m so excited at this point. My husband is actually flirting with me again. We went out last night and for the first time in years, I’ve notice him getting irritated when other men look at me! The last time that happened was when we just got married!
Week 5
It’s day 31, I officially weigh 134 pounds and I’ve lost over 28 pounds in 31 days. Words can’t explain how amazing I feel. It’s a lot easier to shop now a days. It doesn’t take me forever to find the perfect size any more. No more asking “Do you have this in a bigger size?” It’s even helping my marriage, my husband and I started actually going out on the weekends like we did before we got married!

In Conclusion, we were a little doubtful here at Ok!, but you need to try the effects of this diet for yourself; the results are real. After conducting our own personal study we are pleased to see that people are really finding success with it, myself included. And you have nothing to lose. To order your limited time discounted bottles, follow the links I have provided and know that you are getting quality products that work; no strings attached!

How to Use Herbs and Natural Things Instead of Antibiotics

Being sick is no fun but reacting from fear just compounds the problems.  Antibiotics kill the good and the bad and there has been nothing more frightening than having my sweet microbiome removed in 5 quick days after enjoying it and building it for years.  Here are some tips for avoiding needing to use antibiotics.

Making it all worse is that I let myself get tricked because I was strong, I went after the biggest issue in my body.  I killed them but I couldn’t remove them!  The doorways were too small to flow the big mess I made.  Too many dead things at once.  Lesson?  Don’t kill everything just because you can.  Take is slowly, use precaution and get strong.  It will take some strength to be a good traffic cop.

When I first started building my microbiome with Bravo Yogurt, (that I got from Bravocoop.com), I was amazed at what it did for me.  I got more confidence, my body communication improved, and probably all the things that they say it can do like turning on my immune system did happen.  I was really in a new relationship with my microbiome where I took care of it like I would a garden.  I did this by nurtured myself, keeping water and oil flowing through my body, along with eating what would benefit the work of the microbiome.  I am sure that this helped me get well so fast because my microbiome was happy and joyful and therefore, so was I.

Beyond just feeling better in my body, other things began to be evident.  I would look at myself and say, “That’s new behavior”.  I would do this often!

If there is an infection:

If I take antibiotics, my entire microbiome will die. It is very similar to hurricanes and tornados and the path of destruction it leaves behind.  It will take a good 6 months to get back to growing and being happy.   It is difficult to separate from your microbiome by taking antibiotics but the bigger question is “WHAT DO I DO?”.

How to prevent taking Antibiotics

The answers are many and the ideas are all around us in nature.  Let’s take them one at a time.

Build an immune system with Bravo Yogurt.  This will help to remove things as they occur but it will not remove our train wrecks should we set them up and watch them fall!

Prevention

Prevention is very important.  Knowing that your body has to flow the toxins out and that any back up can clog the tiny doors and cause the fluids and toxins to back up. If these doors back up, the areas behind them that are waiting to drain have bad bugs and toxins in them.  They can find a way to resettle or if they are dead, they can cause infection.   Therefore, it is essential to keep your detoxification pathways free and working.

  • Don’t do too much.  Think of your energy and abilities as a table top.  You put in there all the things you need to do in your life.  Run your body, work, have a family, have some fun, and then look and see, what’s left of my energy to detox myself?  not too much right?  Therefore, take your detoxing seriously and do it consistently with the amount of energy that you have to do it in.
    • Leaving lots of little projects or a few big ones in an “open” status will stress you. This type of incompletion causes a drain on your brain and the digestive nervous system.  Cavemen didn’t have lists of intricate things to do.  Technology will make your very archaic nervous system get very hot.  When was the last time you downloaded an update for your nerves?
      • Every night when you go to sleep, complete your thoughts, thank yourself for what you have done.  Turn the page and complete them.  Look ahead for the next day and put your new efforts into the good energy so your kidneys can gather the energy you need to match your tommorrow.

Detoxification

  • Detox for beginners.  Detoxing is a skill: like driving a car or a bicycle.  Know how to drive a detox.  Eating heavier protein can slow down a detox because your body is otherwise busy with digestion and your body management will take reserves from the detox to digest.  Eating lighter or fasting will speed up your detox but you need to be very careful that your exits are open before you do any critical detoxification.  Going too fast is like driving 130 miles per hour to the post office.
  • Discernment in your diet.  Everyone always things that they eat well. However, if you really get into the following skills, you will find that you will feel much, much better because um, well, maybe you didn’t know how to eat well for your body.  There is a big difference between reading books and asking your body what it needs.  That’s when you begin to understand how important the following techniques are:
    • Don’t eat more than you can digest before you go to bed.  If you want to not have bad bugs, take away their job of eating random garbage that has turned to slime.  Be responsible for digesting and cleaning your body before bed and your weight, heart, and energy will stabilize as well.
    • Avoid starches and sugars, this includes rice, potatoes, wheat, and fruit (when they are cravings).   The starchy foods turn into glue even before you eat them making it lots of work for your body to remove the food before it can get to cleaning the deeper issues.
    • Comfort food is designed to push down uncomfortable feelings by using unhealthy patterns of behavior.  If you have uncomfortable feelings, sit with them and let them go through you.  Then they are gone.  It takes only a few moments.   If you are committed to staying off antibiotics, you can’t make a mess out of your body and expect it to still be able to drain, get things tidy and heal the disease.  We expect too much from our body.  We want full-time work for part-time pay.  We need to deal with and clean up after our own unconsciousness, laziness, and indulgence.
    • The High-Road – Make small meals that each include nothing but dark green leafy vegetables and plenty of clean protein.  You may also want to include bone broths, fresh oils, and Amino Acids to broaden the spectrum of your food’s nutrition.  See MAP at Bravocoop.com. See the GAPS Diet on this site.
      • Then, if you are being proactive with your body and giving it the food it needs.  This will help stabilize the blood sugar and help you stay on an even keel

Tonics

Master Tonic is a good idea to avoid infections, viruses, parasites, and cravings.  It has been a very important healing tonic in many cultures preceding institutionalized antibiotics.  The Master Tonic can be made easily with a food processor and a jar.  Use equal amounts of these roots and peppers

  • Ginger root. (1 finger)
  • Horseradish root (6 inches)
  • Turmeric root (a small handful of roots)
  • onion (small)
  • garlic (4 cloves)
  • fresh very hot peppers (3-5 peppers)
  • Grind the veg and put it into colorful layers
  • Fill the jar with an active vinegar, this will make a difference in the taste and culture.

To use the tonic, let it sit for a week or so, take the vinegar off and put it in a small jar.  Then refill the jar with fresh vinegar to cover the veg and let it sit in the refrigerator

Take some master tonic daily and especially at the times that you may crave and eat junk foods.  I also re-examine my overeating habits, my strength, and clarity of purpose.

I ask myself, what do I need to do to assist my body, immune system, and microbiome.  Then I play charades with myself until I “get it”.   It will be something like, get more sleep, be more single-minded, remove frustration, add more meditation, more forgiveness, use oils, etc.  I can expect it to be always different.  I did this for about 10 years until I let myself trust it but don’t let that stop you from learning and growing with it.

Oils

I take the following essential plant oils mixed.  3-4 drops in water with the juice of a lemon.

  • Peppermint
  • Clove bud oil
  • Oregano Oil
  • Thujia
  • Cinnamon leaf

Herbs

I take these things 4-5 times per day at first and if it is a flu and very mucusy, I will take some enzymes that break through all that mucus.

Baths

Hydrogen peroxide is also a very healthy oxidizer for these types of things. Put a half of a jar into a medium about of water in the tub and soak daily until you feel better.

Topical Treatment

Another really cool trick for toothaches is to put a Peroxide whitening strip on the tooth root.  This may need to be done two or three times before the tooth root calms down.

Why Most People Need Vitamin B12 Supplementation, J.Mercola

Why Most People Need Vitamin B12 Supplementation

Story at-a-glance

  • According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, nearly 40 percent of the U.S. population have marginal vitamin B12 status and 9 percent are deficient
  • Vitamin B12 insufficiency and deficiency increase your risk of serious health problems, many of which mimic more serious neurological diseases and can easily lead to misdiagnosis and improper treatment
  • B12 is required for many vital biological functions, including production of adrenal hormones, metabolizing fat, carbs and folate, formation of red blood cells, iron absorption, nervous system function, cognitive health and much more
  • B12 deficiency can even affect a woman’s Pap test, which screens for cervical cancer. Low B12 can affect the appearance of cervical cells, which can result in a false positive
  • Animal foods have become a questionable source of B12 thanks to modern farming practices, and many experts now believe most people really need to take a B12 supplement to ensure healthy B12 status

By Dr. Mercola

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), nearly 40 percent of the U.S. population have marginal vitamin B12 status and 9 percent are deficient.1 Vitamin B12 insufficiency and deficiency increase your risk of serious health problems, many of which mimic more serious neurological diseases and can easily lead to misdiagnosis and improper treatment.

Neurological problems, in particular, are a possibility even at the “low normal” range at or just below 258 picomoles per liter (pmol/L). A level of 148 pmol/L or less is considered a deficiency state. As noted by the USDA:2

Deficiency can cause a type of anemia marked by fewer but larger red blood cells. It can also cause walking and balance disturbances, a loss of vibration sensation, confusion and, in advanced cases, dementia. The body requires B12 to make the protective coating surrounding the nerves. So, inadequate B12 can expose nerves to damage.”

Indeed, vitamin B123 is vital for many functions throughout your body. B12 is required for:

Producing adrenal hormones Metabolizing folate
Digestion and metabolizing fat and carbs Formation of red blood cells
Iron absorption Proper blood circulation
Reproductive health Modulation of gut microbial ecology4
Nervous system function Nerve growth and function
Synthesizing of DNA Regulation and coordination of cell growth5

B12 Deficiency Mimics Many Serious Neurological Disorders and Diseases

As noted in the featured video, B12 deficiency can look exactly like multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer’s disease and autism. The film is made by registered nurse Sally Pacholok, a leading advocate for B12 deficiency awareness.6 According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), a deficiency can even affect a woman’s Pap test, which screens for cervical cancer.

Low B12 can affect the appearance of cervical cells, which can result in a false positive.7 Deficiency also raises your risk of heart disease. Vegans or strict vegetarians who abstain from animal products and do not supplement their diet with vitamin B12 will typically become anemic. Nervous and digestive system damage can also result.8

Claims that B12 is present in certain algae, tempeh and brewer’s yeast fail to take into account that the B12 analogues present in these foods are not bioavailable. The only reliable and absorbable sources of vitamin B12 are animal products. However, even animal foods have become a questionable source thanks to modern farming practices and, for this reason, many experts now believe most people really need to take a B12 supplement to ensure healthy B12 status.9

B12 Deficiency Widespread Even Among Meat Eaters

Interestingly, research shows no association between B12 blood levels and consumption of meat, poultry and fish — the primary sources of B12.10 According to the researchers, rampant B12 insufficiency is not due to lack of meat consumption. Rather, the vitamin simply isn’t being properly absorbed. B12 is tightly bound to proteins and high acidity is required to break this bond. In essence, a lot of people simply do not have sufficient stomach acid to separate the B12 from the protein.

The researchers speculate that the widespread use of antacids plays a significant role, especially among younger people. In a previous article,11 Dr. Jennifer Rooke, assistant professor in the department of community health and preventive medicine at Morehouse School of Medicine, also notes that factory farmed meat simply does not contain the B12 levels we’re used to.

The reason for this is because animals raised in concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs) aren’t fed their natural diet. Cows are fed corn and grains, most of which are genetically engineered (GE) and loaded with pesticides, rather than grass. The same goes for chickens, the natural diet of which are insects, worms, seeds and berries, not GE corn.

“It is true that animal products contain B12, and strict vegetarians/vegans are at risk for B12 deficiency, but absorbing B12 from animal products is a very complex process and people who eat meat may be at equal or greater risk for B12 deficiency,” Rooke writes. The reason CAFO animals don’t produce as much B12 is because B12 is made by bacteria that live in both soil and the guts of animals. Cows and chickens raised on pasture obtain the vitamin from the dirt on their food.

Pesticides also kill off soil bacteria, which is why conventionally grown grains are not a good source of B12, and CAFO animals are routinely given antibiotics, which also kill of these beneficial microbes. “In order to maintain meat a source of B12 the meat industry now adds it to animal feed; 90 percent of B12 supplements produced in the world are fed to livestock.

Even if you only eat grass fed organic meat you may not be able to absorb the B12 attached to animal protein. It may be more efficient to just skip the animals and get B12 directly from supplements,” Rooke writes.

Pregnant Women Beware: B12 Deficiency Can Cause Severe Neurological Damage in Your Child

While vegans are urged to augment their B12 intake by stocking up on nutritional yeast, coconut oil and fortified coconut milk, a strict vegan or even vegetarian diet is not recommended. In fact, there are cases in which a deficiency causes serious brain abnormalities. Women of childbearing age also need to be aware that B12 deficiency will place their offspring at risk.

If you’re deficient and breastfeed, your child will also be deficient, and may develop neurological symptoms — symptoms that are frequently misdiagnosed as autism and/or other neurological diseases. It’s really critical to catch a B12 deficiency early, as impaired brain and nerve development can be very difficult to correct once the damage is done. In adults, B12 deficiency can develop in about six years.12 That’s how long it takes to deplete your body’s B12 stores.

Babies, however, do not have B12 stores, especially if the mother was deficient during pregnancy, so side effects can develop far more rapidly. Babies whose moms had a B12 deficiency during pregnancy also have a higher risk of developing Type 2 diabetes and other serious metabolic problems.13

A deficiency can be corrected by weekly shots of vitamin B12 or daily high-dose B12 supplements. Mild cases may also be corrected by increased intake of vitamin B12-rich foods. A detailed list of the B12 amounts of different foods can be found on the NIH website.14Some of the richest sources include clams, beef liver, wild rainbow trout and wild sockeye salmon.

B12 Deficiency Plays a Role in Depression and Other Psychiatric Conditions

Aside from symptoms mimicking autism and Alzheimer’s, B12 deficiency also contributes to depression and other psychiatric conditions. (Other B vitamins, including niacin (B3), B6, biotin (B8) and folate (B9) deficiencies can also produce psychiatric effects.) For example, research has shown vitamin B12 deficiency can trigger confusion, agitation, depression, mania, psychosis and paranoid delusions.15,16

One study17,18 found vitamins B6, B8 (inositol) and B12 in combination were very effective for improving schizophrenic symptoms when taken in high doses — more so than standard drug treatments alone. Low doses were ineffective. One of the reasons for this may be related to the fact that schizophrenics tend to have abnormalities in their B12 and glutamate pathways.19

Low B12 Implicated in Migraines

B12, along with B6 and folic acid, has also been shown to reduce the frequency, severity and disability of migraines. In one study,20daily vitamin supplements produced a twofold reduction in migraines over a six-month period. Certain gene mutations and dysfunctions can lead to higher levels of homocysteine production, which can make you more susceptible to migraine attacks.

Vitamins B6 and B12 help to optimize your homocysteine levels. The scientists also found that depending on your genotype, you may need a higher or lower dose to benefit. People with TT genotypes, which have a lower enzymatic rate, metabolize less homocysteine than those with C allele carriers. As a result, the former experience less of a benefit from the supplementation and require higher doses.

Signs of Vitamin B12 Deficiency

If you’re frequently beset by fatigue and general lack of energy, you may be experiencing the onset of B12 deficiency. Other seemingly unrelated symptoms such as poor memory, shortness of breath, loss of taste and smell, depression and tingling in your extremities, can be indicative of low B12.

Anxiousness and depression may occur because a B12 shortage depresses the brain chemical serotonin, a neurotransmitter linked to your brain’s pleasure centers, and dopamine, the mood regulator registering memory and mood. Unless there’s an intervention, low B12 levels may even lead to paranoia, delusions and hallucinations. Other signs and symptoms include:21

A numb, tingly, “pins and needles” sensation in your hands, legs or feet, which may indicate possible nerve damage.
A red, swollen, “beefy” tongue with fewer papillae “bumps” containing taste buds.
Mouth sores/ulcers.
Blurry or double vision, or shadows in your field of vision, caused by optic nerve damage from a B12 deficiency.
Yellow skin (jaundice), an indication that your red blood cells are degrading, which releases a yellow pigment in the process.
Unstable, wobbly and dizzy feelings, which are signs there may not be enough oxygen in your blood, related to low B12.
Memory loss, which may be a red flag when it has no other potential cause.

Most People Are at Risk for B12 Deficiency

There are a number of key reasons for a B12 deficiency, including the following. Unfortunately, doctors frequently overlook these common contributing causes, and B12 deficiency is frequently misdiagnosed as something far more serious.

Needless to say, when a deficiency is misdiagnosed as depression, Alzheimer’s, autism or other serious disease, the root cause remains unaddressed, and no amount of treatment will be significantly effective. So, if any of these situations apply to you, be particularly mindful of your B12 status, especially if you have symptoms associated with deficiency.

Vegetarians and vegans are susceptible since B12 is derived from animal products.
People who regularly drink alcohol, as B12 is stored in your liver.
Anyone with an autoimmune disease like Crohn’s or celiac, which may prevent your body from being able to absorb B12.
People who drink more than four cups of coffee daily are more prone to vitamin B deficiencies than non-coffee consumers.22
Those who’ve had gastric bypass surgery and therefore have altered digestive systems, as this may impair B12 absorption.
People exposed to nitrous oxide (laughing gas), which can wipe out whatever B12 reserves you may have in your body.
Adults over 50, because as you grow older, your ability to produce intrinsic factor decreases.
People with helicobacter pylori infection. Intrinsic factor is a protein made by stomach cells that’s necessary for B12 absorption. H. pylori bacteria can destroy intrinsic factor, thereby preventing B12 absorption.
People who take antacids, which have a tendency to interfere with B12 absorption, especially over time.
Patients who take metformin for low blood sugar, as the drug interferes with B12 absorption, doubling your risk of deficiency.23
Anyone taking a proton-pump inhibitor (PPIs) like Prevacid or Nexium or H2 blocker such as Pepcid or Zantac. Research24 shows taking PPIs for more than two years increases your risk of B12 deficiency by 65 percent.
Women taking birth control pills for an extended period of time, as the estrogen impairs absorption.25
People who have taken antibiotics, as these drugs have been shown to induce vitamin B12 deficiency.26

How Much Vitamin B12 Do You Need and Which Type Is Best?

The recommended dietary allowance for vitamin B12 is:27

  • 0.4 to 1.8 micrograms (mcg) for newborns and children up to 13, depending on their exact age
  • 2.4 mcg for people age 14 and older
  • 2.6 mcg for pregnant women
  • 2.8 mcg for breastfeeding women

Fortunately, you don’t need to worry about overdosing on B12 because it’s water soluble, so your body will simply flush out any excess. The type of B12 you use, however, is a factor worthy of consideration. While cyanocobalamin is the form of B12 found in most supplements, this form is far from ideal and does not occur naturally in foods. As explained by Dr. Peter J. D’Adamo:28

“As the name implies, cyanocobalamin contains a cyanide molecule. Most people are familiar with cyanide as a poisonous substance. Although the amount of cyanide in a normal B12 supplement is small and from a toxicology point, viewed as insignificant, your body will still need to remove and eliminate this compound. This removal is accomplished through your detoxification systems with substances like glutathione being very important for the elimination of the cyanide.”

A far better form of B12 — especially for the support of nervous system health and healthy vision — is methylcobalamin, which is the naturally occurring form found in food. It’s more absorbable and your body retains it in greater amounts than cyanocobalamin.29Considering the many health risks associated with B12 deficiency, and the fact that CAFO animal products — which is what most people eat — tend to be low in B12, it may be wise for most people to take a high-quality methylcobalamin supplement.

Healthy Pool! Water balance out of the ordinary!

I began to notice that I wasn’t happy in my pool. It wasn’t “inviting”.  I didn’t know why or how to fix it.  I just knew I didn’t like it.  I kept paying attention and began to learn things that could really transform my experience.  I decided that it was the chlorine.  It didn’t smell or feel nice and although it was very subtle, I found it repelling.  I found myself not wanting to keep the chlorine at the sanitizing level that others have suggested.  Oh my.  I spent a summer of green pools.  My pool and I were miserable.

First, I deemed the “status” of my pool and my house.  At 13,000 gallons, I declared my pool a large spa rather than of a small pool.  That way, I have something grand instead of something small.  Similarly, I declared my house to be a “cottage”.  We enjoy it immensely!    It is the perfect place to retire and that’s what we are looking forward to!

I wanted my large spa/small pool to be very healthy.  I wanted it to lure me to get in it and to have it be magical when I got there.  I wanted it to uplift my body while I enjoyed the water and I wanted to sleep like a baby.  I guess that’s the opposite of being miserable.  At this moment, I am well on my way to having that experience.  There are a few things I would need to tweak.

Alternative water chemistry:

There is lots of alternative water chemistry in the hot tub world.  In a hot tub, everything gets much more intense.  The heat and the steam reek of whatever is in there and the owners and water maintenance people are acutely aware of it.

My friend Ray is a chemist and health officinado.  He had very painful lesions and he was seeking help for them.  He researched and found the best alternative doctors after the regular doctors offered no help.  One of his alternative doctors understood what he had and within a few weeks, the lesions healed.  It was a simple fix!  The answer was, massive iodine deficiency.

Iodine is a mineral found in some foods. The body needs iodine to make thyroid hormones. These hormones control the body’s metabolism and many other important functions. The body also needs thyroid hormones for proper bone and brain development during pregnancy and infancy.

Ray taught me about the relationship of iodine to the rest of the chemical group on the periodic table called halogens and how the body uses iodine as a sanitizer but can easily get overshadowed by the heavier halogens.  The literature available indicates that there are a billion people with iodine deficiency.  Ray’s painful lesions began to heal instantly by taking an iodine supplement.  He referred me to this book:

The Iodine Crisis: What You Don’t Know About Iodine Can Wreck Your Life

Basically, in the periodic table, group 7 includes chlorine, bromine, fluorine, then iodine, which all have seven electrons in their outer shell. Here is the problem, in a displacement reaction a less reactive element is removed and replaced by a more reactive element.

The element we need is iodine.  The heavier halogens, chlorine, fluorine, and bromine remove iodine in a chemical reaction.  Here is the rub: using tap water containing chlorine and fluoride and some fluoride toothpaste is enough to replace the iodine in the halogen receptors.  Everyone is trained and reinforced to create a body crisis.

The solutions to this crisis include filtering your water, finding a fluoride free toothpaste and eliminating sources of chlorine, bromine, and fluorine.  A chlorine-free environment brought me right back to my swimming pool.  I now understood why my body didn’t enjoy being immersed in a chlorine bath!  It was time to take my own power back and make my pool clean and wonderful without chlorine.

I decided to research using iodine in my pool.  I need iodine, it might make sense, so I went about seeing if it was feasible. In my research, I learned that it was indeed available.  Bernie Litman from www.elearnaid.com had a website about it and was kind enough to spend time with me to talk about it.  He said that potassium iodide doesn’t evaporate because it doesn’t turn into a gas until it gets over 300 degrees.  It will simply stay in the water.

I decided to go for it.  I bought some potassium iodide and a Hanna handheld iodine checker.  This measured how much iodine was in the pool.   Nothing!  The instrument read that I had no iodine in the pool!  I put more in.  Nothing.  I had put plenty in the pool and I was expecting a reading of 2.0 ppm or higher which would indicate a significant amount of sanitizer.

After pondering, I realized that the potassium iodide was present but it wasn’t splitting into potassium and iodine, thus I didn’t have a reading.  I went back to Barry and he suggested that I needed a clean oxidizer like ozone or hydrogen peroxide to split the potassium iodide into its singular units.  I needed more research.

I have ozone jets in my pool system.  I have a unit called Solar Eclipse has 5 ozone jets and UV lights.  This “should have” worked but didn’t.  I was stumped.  The answer did come but not at this time.  I didn’t have enough water flow to run the Solar Eclipse but at the time I was working on this issue, I was simply stumped.   See Healthy Pool: Water Flow

Barry suggested that I needed an oxidizer.  He said that chlorine was an oxidizer and that sometimes people use Hydrogen Peroxide as an oxidizer.  I began to read.  I did learn that H2O2 or Hydrogen Peroxide had been studied as a pool oxidizer and deemed worthy.  Perhaps even better than chlorine.  Since no one knew how bad the chlorine was for thyroid hormones and that it was more expensive than chlorine, it didn’t catch on.  But it did with me!  I bought some, put it in the pool and there it was!  My iodine showed up on my measurement instrument!  Yeah!!

It was a bummer that it was winter and the heater wasn’t hooked up.  I watched and worked with the H2O2 until the spring and when I went in, I was amazed at how wonderful it made my body feel.  I was hooked!  That was the experience I wanted.

The iodine was present, the H2O2 was terrific and the experience was the best. Thank you, Barry Litman!  You changed my life by sharing your life experience.  It was time to relax and enjoy what I had worked for.  A really healthy swim.

Maybe the most amazing part of using hydrogen peroxide for pool and spa treatment is the simplicity of it. It can not chemically build up in your pool. You do not have to continually be balancing chemicals against more chemicals to make it work. It does not require complex filters or machinery. It does not require exact levels of concentration to work.

It bio-degrades completely to only healthy substances of water and oxygen – good for you and your pool/spa. It contains no toxins. You do not have to fear how it interacts with other chemicals. Nothing in hydrogen peroxide causes cancer, sterility, birth defects, brain damage, tumors, nervous system damage. It does not smell bad. Hydrogen peroxide for pool and spa usage does not produce toxic vapors. There is no complex transition to change to H2O2 for pool and spa treatment.

Healthy Pool!! Water flow

Managing your pool water flow is really important and has lots of elements to it.

How to correct the low water pressure in your pool.

in addition to this video, I tried for a year to get my pressure fixed. I had lots of things going on and I fixed the clogs in the line.  For this, the tool that finally did the job was a small rubber piece that blows up and blocks the pipe from pushing water backward and pressures the water forwards, clearing the blockage.  It is an elegant solution that requires no plumber and the part is $10 and reusable.

Although this fixed the blockage, it didn’t fix the low pressure so I had to keep going.  I am writing because the traditional solutions offered on the web didn’t fix my issue.  Nothing did!  That is until I got to the issue and then it was fixed.

A plumber friend, Bill Drinkard, used to take care of pools for the military bases.  He suggested that I change the diameter of the pipes by making it all 2 inch from the pump to the return.  I ended up buying a 2″ filter cartridge to replace the 1 1/2 inch one I had.   I bought a new variable pump to get maximization of water flow.  The issue never fixed.  I was very perplexed.  I used the pool like that for the fall and it ran through its winter cycle.

The next year, I did a deep spring cleaning which included cleaning the filter.  After a TSP bath, the filter was still so heavy that my husband wanted it to be changed.  I had one ready and installed the new filter.  All of a sudden, my issue was fixed!!! The old filter which came with the new filter box had only a few small holes in it.   It didn’t let enough water through it!!  The new Pleatco filter that I put in said on the box that it has special engineering to let the water through in a good way.  It worked!!!

Instead, of the water backing up, causing pressure and working against itself, the new filter let more water through and suddenly, all my issues were gone.  The water could move the pool system.  I couldn’t believe it.  I worked so hard to fix that!!  All I had to do was to reset the pool pump for lower settings with great results and movement.  Suddenly the skimmer basket cleaned the pool surface, and everything worked the way it should.

I had read about using an open weave filter, but I worried that the construction and design of the filter would be “flimsy”.  The manufacture would have engineered it properly in the new filter cartridge.  Apparently not!!   I am so happy!!!!

I did have to change to a floating skimmer.  The pool skimmer is right under the waterfall.  The waterfall pushes the water away, making the place to collect dust and debris to be on the other side of the pool.  By using the vacuum line, I put a Skim-Around filter basket in.  This did the trick although some of the particles collect around it and on the hose with breaks the water surface in one place.  I just use my skimmer net to get them out of the pool to make the sanitizer’s job easier!

Speaking of sanitizer,  the summer before, I had put in a Solar Eclipse unit which has UV Lights and Ozone generators.  But it really didn’t work because the pool wasn’t pushing water. We had put the Solar Eclipse up as a wall mount to keep it away from the rainwater flooding that area sometimes.  It wasn’t working because the water wasn’t getting through it because of the weak water flow.  All of a sudden, it began to work.  I could tell because the algae and pool clarity was MUCH BETTER after the cleaning cycle.  The water looked great.

Another great improvement was to buy a dolphin pool vacuum.   This helped me because it didn’t rely on water pressure from the pool and could remove debris and have its filters cleaned each time I used it.  Although it was expensive, I found a guy who wanted to sell one and he hadn’t really used it.  HALF PRICE!!!  I got lucky.

The pool now pushes water through my sanitizer, doesn’t make as much noise, the day feature really moves the water and it is now effective to clean it.  This whole time I had a brand new unit which didn’t work.  I couldn’t work that out.  It was supposed to work!

The sanitizer uses ozone and UV lights and it is recommended to run it 24 hours.  Using my new variable pump, I have it run quietly at night, with a bit of waterfall but not too loud for conversation.  Then in the morning, partly to get me going, I have it set for a strong current to clean the water.   Before, with low water pressure, it didn’t work.  It didn’t have enough pressure to get enough water through the sanitizer, now with the new filter installed, it works!  The pool stays cleaner and I don’t need as much oxidizer.  I really wanted that and wondered what I did wrong for a very long time!

A few more things that I have done to make my pool work for me.  There are some things that you just can’t get around:  sweeping the sides of the pool is one of them.  It doesn’t seem to be that effective either when I sweep.  The algae seems to still be there.  My polyquat 60 works much better with circulation.  But, I still get little black particles in the cracks of the gunite.  I fear that it is the roots of black algae because the pool was so sluggish.

I like efficient solutions.  I need to get the pool walls really scrubbed clean, much like a show grout.  This time, I got innovative!   I made it more efficient by putting my pressure washer nozzle on a long pool brush/net handle and attached it with lots of velcro strips.  Then I gently cleaned the sides of the pool, the bottom around the lights, and inside the vents which had algae lying inside.  Wow!  My pool sparkles.

Using the pressure washer needs some caution.   You don’t want to get in too close or too intense or you will remove the stones from the liner.  There is another issue, which is, once I start shooting the water into the pool, the bubbles make it hard to see so I can’t do it visually, I have to go through it systematically.  The pressure washer is loud and stinky and I am careful to use it only during midday working hours.

The good news is it gets it much cleaner than vacuuming or brushing.   If I use my head and keep it up, I only have to clean it once per month or after the rain and, of course, I don’t want to strip the gunite.  I need a new gunite liner and I thought I would get a handle on the water chemistry, the cleaning cycles and bring the pool up to date BEFORE putting in the new gunite lining.  I would get my education first!

I live in central Florida and it rains a lot in the summer.  The water from the swamp steams off the creeks and the swamp algae and all rises up into the air and dumps down in a thunderstorm.  The water in the pool gets this gel and I know that this is the nest of the microbes!  I clean this out of my body with enzymes.  I know this is what attaches itself to the pool walls.  That’s why I am determined to keep the pool sparkling clean!

I am still working on a way to cover the pool so the oxidizer doesn’t have to work so hard to remove the organic material.  But my pool is a kidney shape, with landscaping close to the sides and there is a waterfall which complicates the anchors.  I am thinking of putting a tarp up high and angling the rainwater away from the porch and house.  If this is not too hard, it will make it very easy to keep the pool clean!
