“What I did on my summer vacation.” by Maryann Castellanos

This summer was full of surprises!  They were all “expected”, but the timing!!!  They  ended up being in very close proximity!

I haven’t even had time to write this carefully and add the pictures, etc.  But here is what I got.

Ben and Jaysa got engaged in the end of April!  They set their date for June 22 and later changed it to July 27th and Aug 4 for NC.  ( A good thing too, because Jaysa was still in exams until the last minute and Ben just completed his helicopter instructor’s rating in the nick of time.)

Jaysa and family drove out to accommodate her grandmother’s special needs for her wheelchair and vehicle. Jaysa’s aunt and uncle from Idaho also came to CA with all the kids and the families had lots of fun.

I got to be the Queen, aka, mother of the groom.

My sister Carol came.

As well as Scott and Pearson

Teresa kept an eye on the kitchen and got the details in order.  What fun it was.

My youngest, Mike (19) decided to change his plans from a four year degree to a two year Associates Degree.  Making his graduation magically appear on my schedule for July the 7th!  Richard and I flew in on Thursday and we got to see his place in Brooklyn before we left on Sunday.

It was a wonderful graduation with synchronized serving at the president’s table which was very entertaining.  The food was so wonderful.

We got to meet Sydney and her parents, visit the rose garden at the Roosevelt Mansion (summer home) and many other wonderful treats.

Mike and Sydney had prepared a living space for Mike to start work after graduation.  During these weekend trips in the city, they began to really understand their new life and accepted it.  Sydney changed her plans from going to Charlton to finding a job and living in NYC.  She interviewed and heard back right before graduation.

To help me understand Mike’s job, he showed me a website of the TOP50Restaurants.com.  I expected it to be in the USA, but instead, it was in the world. Of the top 10 that I glanced at,  there was only 1 in the USA and that is where he had his job.  I was a big overwhelmed to realize he made the major league!  Mike assured me that Sydney’s job was just as prominent.  Mike is interning with Daniel Boulud.  Sydney is with Jean-Georges Vongerichten.

Mike found them an apartment and signed a lease in mid august and Sydney starts in the first week of September.    She has been collecting some furniture and she and her parents will be on their way to settle her in the city over Labor Day.

The third surprise is that my dear mother passed away on April 30th, 2012. We had gotten word that she was passing and my brothers met my sister in Sarasota where she had been sick and was at hospice.

I flew in at dinner time and she passed only a few hours later at midnight.  We were there; her two sisters (Marilyn and Hattie) and a daughter of each, (Sue, Karen, and me).  We sat with her and loved her.   At 11:30 the crew began to leave, but I was going to stay over with her.   The girls said their good bys and Marilyn said goodby urging Dot to let go.  That she was done and complete and she go.  We left Marilyn and went into the hall to give them privacy.  Marilyn came out to get us. Her breathing had changed.

The hospice nurse came to evaluate and told us how fortunate we were to be here and that her breathing had changed even more since she had begun observing.  She left us to hold the energy of passing for Dot, letting us know that she would be nearby.

It came to me to sing to her the Prayer of Saint Francis.  She couldn’t talk or open her eyes, but we know she hear us.  She was still, three little tears came out of her eye. Sue had called the others to come, but Dot passed before they got there.  I had talked her through it.  She was protesting internally with Marilyn, that she didn’t like that she wanted her to . . . die.  I re-framed it as not a bad thing.  It was an easy thing.  Like stepping out on a stage where all the people in the audience knew you.  Mom was concerned because she didn’t know what to do!  I suggested (inward conversation) that she just be “herself”.  There was no action or thought needed.  Just be herself.  She did it and slipped from us at that moment.

My brothers and sister, aunts and uncle, and cousin all stayed at my sister’s house in Sarasota, Fl.  Frankly, we weren’t going to sleep any time soon!  We couldn’t get anything done the next day.  It felt like we got hit with a DNA bomb as mom passed and all our current resources were taken out in the blast.  By Tuesday, we came up with a plan to have the funeral on the following Saturday in NJ.  We let people know and made arrangements for those who needed it, so that we could all be present. Then we went our ways until then.

I left Florida by air to NJ.  Mind you it was the first few days of May!!   That is snow bird migration time to go north.  There was a long line of wheel chairs that made me smile because the other side of the flight only had a few!  People from NJ make me smile.

Our NJ service was very memorable with friends, relatives, Dot’s cousins, my cousins, neighbors, etc.  All arriving and sharing in such wonderful fashion.  Somehow, my grandmother who passed in 1977 and the whole “gestalt” was there for me.  All those memories!  Whew.

What was also amazing and wonderful is that all of Dot’s grandchildren were there.  Even those who said they couldn’t come!  Peter came in from China, Caitie and Brian from their exams.  It was amazing!

After the service, we met in NYC for a “good time” which Dot was noted for.  We all went out on a yacht for a brunch cruise to the Statue of Liberty!  What fun to have us all together and what a great finale.  We all left feeling uplifted and satisfied!

Henry, Michael J., Caitie, and Sydney

But wait, there is more. . .

There was still the NC ashes to inter, service at church with the full choir and the cookies and punch in the basement of the church.  All southern style.  We arranged this in August at the same time as Ben and Jaysa’s reception so that I would be there to represent her.

It was wonderful.

Lithium – The Misunderstood Mineral

Lithium – The Misunderstood Mineral

by Dr. Jonathan V. Wright, MD

(Reprinted From “Nutrition and Healing”)

Think young into your 90s with this anti-aging secret for your brain

The biggest problem with lithium treatment is people’s perception of it. Since its most well known use is for bi-polar disorder, lithium sometimes encounters the same stigma as mental illness itself.

I’ve been taking a lithium supplement every day for several years. When I tell people about it, they sometimes get funny looks on their faces and start eyeing the corners of the room for straight jackets. These reactions don’t surprise me, since, as I said, lithium is usually associated with mental illness. But I’ve never suffered from a mental disorder (although certain mainstream medical doctors and possibly a federal agency or two might disagree). Treating manic-depressive (bi-polar) illness is lithium’s most widely known use–but it isn’t an anti-psychotic drug, as many people believe. In fact, lithium isn’t a drug at all. It’s actually a mineral-part of the same family of minerals that includes sodium and potassium.

You might remember reading several editions of Health e-Tips a few months ago that discussed various benefits of lithium. In addition to the benefits mentioned in the e-Tips, like controlling gout and relieving rashes caused by sebhorric dermatitis, lithium also has some great brain-boosting effects. In fact, I’ve reviewed both recent lithium research and the research spanning the past few decades, and I’m convinced that lithium is an anti-aging nutrient for human brains. And there are also some very strong reasons to believe that lithium therapy will slow the progression of serious degenerative mental problems, including Alzheimer’s disease, senile dementia, and Parkinson’s disease.

So there are obviously quite a few “pros” to using lithium, but you’re probably wondering about the “cons.” In the 1930s and ’40s, lithium chloride was sold in stores as a salt substitute. But (as frequently happens) some people used way too much and suffered toxic overdoses, so it fell out of common use. Fortunately, lithium toxicity is entirely preventable, and it’s also easily treatable if it ever does occur — but more about that later. Right now, let’s get into some of the specifics on just how you (and your brain) can benefit from lithium.

Taking (grey) matters into your own hands

Hercule Poirot, Agatha Christie’s famous fictional detective, had an amusing quirk in his incessant concern for his “little grey cells.” I thought of Hercule several years ago when I saw the following headline in an issue of the Lancet: “Lithium-induced increase in human brain grey matter.”

That may not sound like an earth-shattering piece of news, but it actually was quite a major discovery. To that point, medical experts believed that once our brains matured, it was all downhill from then on. Decades of autopsies, x-rays, and, more recently, brain scans have repeatedly shown that brains shrink measurably with aging. But according to their report in the Lancet, Wayne State University (Detroit) researchers found that lithium has the ability to both protect and renew brain cells.1  Eight of 10 individuals who took lithium showed an average 3 percent increase in brain grey matter in just four weeks.

Lithium may help to generate entirely new cells too: Another group of researchers recently reported that lithium also enhances nerve cell DNA replication.2   DNA replication is a first step in the formation of a new cell of any type.

The Wayne State study used high-dose lithium, but I’m certainly not using that amount myself, nor do I recommend it. Prescription quantities of lithium just aren’t necessary for “everyday” brain cell protection and re-growth. Studies done years ago have shown that very low amounts of lithium can also measurably influence brain function for the better.

Protect yourself from brain damage you didn’t even know you had

Aside from boosting brain mass, recent research also shows that lithium can help protect your brain from the “beating” it gets in the course of everyday life. Your brain cells are constantly at risk of damage from exposure to toxins of all sorts-even ones produced by your own body. Toxic molecules are formed naturally during the course of normal brain metabolism.3-7   Since these “normal” toxic molecules (sometimes called “excitotoxins”) are produced every day of your life, eventually they start to wear down or erode away brain mass.

Another well-known cause of brain cell injury is overactivated N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptors. Lithium can inhibit this overactivity.8   And lithium also increases production of a major brain protective protein called “bcl-2″ in both human and animal brain cells.9

So it appears that lithium can protect against normal brain erosion and shrinkage that would otherwise occur over the course of our lives. But lithium also protects the brain from other less “normal” problems too, like damage caused by prescription medications and strokes.

When a clot or other obstruction occurs in a blood vessel serving the brain, it causes a reduction of blood flow to that area. If it’s bad enough, the lack of blood flow will cause a stroke and death of brain cells. (This type of stroke is known as an ischemic stroke.) Research in experimental animals with deliberately induced ischemic strokes has shown that lithium reduces the areas of cell death.10,11

In one of these studies, researchers blocked a brain artery in rats. Some were pre-treated with lithium for 16 days, the rest weren’t. The researchers reported that the lithium-treated rats experienced 56 percent less cell death and significantly fewer neurologic deficits than the control rats.12

And sometimes medications designed to treat other problems end up having a negative impact on the brain. For example, anti-convulsant medications cause abnormal levels of brain cell death. But lithium significantly protects against this type of cell death-so much so that this effect has been called “robust” (a term scientists use to mean “It really works!”).13

In fact, based on its general neuroprotective effect, researchers have recently suggested that “the use of lithium as a neurotrophic/neuroprotective agent should be considered in the long term treatment of mood disorders, irrespective of the ‘primary’ treatment modality being used for the condition.”14    Translation: Lithium should be used along with any patent medicine being used for depression, anxiety, or any other “mood-altering” reason, since it will protect brain cells against their unwanted toxic effects. The researchers didn’t say so, but I will: Any list of “mood altering substances” should include alcohol, tobacco, caffeine, “uppers,” “downers,” and-for those who do inhale-marijuana. Harmless as some of them might seem, these substances can cause brain damage with medium to long-term abuse.

Keeping your brain’s lines of communication open -and healthy

Scientists determine how healthy brain cells are by measuring levels of a molecule called N-acetyl-aspartate (NAA).   A decrease in NAA is thought to reflect decreased nerve cell viability, decreased function, or even nerve cell loss.15 In a study of 19 research volunteers given four weeks of lithium, 14 experienced a significant increase in NAA, one had no change, and four had a small decrease.16

Now, what about the interaction between those new, protected, healthy brain cells? Communication between brain cells and networks of brain cells is called “signaling.” And lithium is actually necessary for at least two signal-carrying pathways.17   Researchers have also reported that lithium may help to repair abnormally functioning signaling pathways in critical areas of the brain.18

Lithium and Alzheimer’s: New hope for a “hopeless” situation

As you know, there’s no cure for Alzheimer’s disease and there’s very little available for patients (and families) that can offer even partial relief from the turmoil it causes.   So when new treatments are developed or discovered, it’s usually big news -a ray of hope for people stuck in a seemingly hopeless situation. One of these newly developed patent medications, called Memantine,(tm) was recently approved in Europe. Even though it’s not officially “approved” in this country (yet), thousands of people are already importing Memantine to the U.S. via various Internet sources. But why go through all the trouble (not to mention risk) of getting and using this new patent formula? Apparently, it “works” by protecting brain cells against damage caused by a major excitotoxin, glutamate. But protecting against glutamate-induced nerve cell damage is also one of the well-known actions of lithium. So if it’s true that this newly approved patent medication slows the progress of Alzheimer’s disease in this way, then lithium should slow Alzheimer’s disease progression, too. Of course, lithium treatment, which isn’t patentable and doesn’t have nearly the profit potential of patented Alzheimers medications, hasn’t made any headlines. But that doesn’t mean it isn’t a promising option for patients struggling with Alzheimer’s disease.

There are many other research findings that also strongly suggest that lithium will protect against potential Alzheimer’s disease and slow the progression of existing cases. Researchers have reported that lithium inhibits beta-amyloid secretion, and also prevents damage caused by beta-amyloid protein once it’s been formed.20-23 Beta-amyloid peptide is a signature protein involved in Alzheimer’s disease: the more beta-amyloid protein, the worse the Alzheimer’s becomes.

Overactivation of a brain cell protein called tau protein also contributes to neuronal degeneration in Alzheimer’s disease, as does the formation of neurofibrillary tangles Lithium inhibits both of these nerve-cell damaging problems.24,25

And you’ve likely read that individuals with Alzheimer’s disease usually have excess aluminum accumulation in brain cells. While it’s not yet known whether this excess aluminum is a cause, an effect, or just coincidental, most health-conscious individuals take precautions to avoid ingesting aluminum. Unfortunately, it’s impossible to completely avoid all aluminum, since it’s naturally present in nearly all foods. But lithium can help protect your brain against aluminum by helping to “chelate” it so that it can be more easily removed from the body.25

Although Alzheimer’s disease and senile dementia aren’t technically the same, they do share many of the same degenerative features so there’s every reason to expect that lithium will help prevent or slow the progression of senile dementia too.

A younger, healthier brain with just one small dose a day

As I mentioned earlier, some of these studies used rather high doses of lithium. And in some instances, as in the case of manic depression, doses as high as 90 to 180 milligrams of elemental lithium from 900 to 1800 milligrams of lithium carbonate are necessary. Quantities of lithium in that range must be monitored closely to guard against overdose and toxicity.

But you really don’t need large amounts to improve your “every-day” brain function. Studies have repeatedly shown that substantially lower amounts of lithium can significantly improve brain function (as reflected in behavior).

The amounts of lithium I recommend for brain anti-aging range from 10 to 20 milligrams (from lithium aspartate or lithium orotate) daily. I’ve actually been recommending these amounts since the 1970s. At first I was exceptionally cautious and asked all of my patients taking lithium to have regular “lithium level” blood tests and thyroid function tests. After a year or so, I quit asking for the lithium level blood tests, since 100 percent of them came back very low. Another year after that, I stopped requesting routine thyroid function tests, too, only doing one when I was suspicious of a potential problem. In the 30 years since, I’ve rarely found one.

Protect your brain starting today–no prescription necessary

High-dose lithium is available only by prescription. But low-dose lithium (capsules or tablets containing 5 milligrams of lithium from lithium aspartate or lithium orotate) is available from a few natural food stores and compounding pharmacies.

If you’re interested in keeping your brain as young as possible for as long as possible, you should definitely consider lithium therapy. Review this information with your physician…but make sure he is skilled and knowledgeable in nutritional and natural medicine!

A sneak peek at even more lithium secrets

In Part 2, I’ll review lithium’s many other effects-from preventing anorexia to relieving cluster headaches, to lowering blood sugar (and that’s just to name a few!). I think you’ll be surprised at just how versatile this misunderstood mineral can be.

In the meantime, if you’d like to read the Health e-Tips on lithium (or to sign up to begin receiving these free e-mail updates), visit the Nutrition & Healing website at www.wrightnewsletter.com.

Part 2     Lithium fights crime and some of your most nagging health concerns

Turns out it’s not only the strict use of the death penalty lowering crime rates in some areas of Texas. And while I’m sure “Dubya” would be quick to take credit, it’s not stricter laws or changes in sentencing guidelines either. Using 10 years of data accumulated from 27 Texas counties, researchers found that the incidence of homicide, rape, burglary, and suicide, as well as other crimes and drug use, were significantly lower in counties whose drinking water supplies contained 70-170 micrograms of lithium per liter than those with little or no lithium in their water.

The researchers wrote: “These results suggest that lithium at low dosage levels has a generally beneficial effect on human behavior…increasing the human lithium intakes by supplementation, or the lithiation [adding lithium] of drinking water is suggested as a possible means of crime, suicide, and drug-dependency reduction at the individual and community level.”

And that’s not to mention all of the lithium health benefits we went over in Part 1: It may be useful in treating Alzheimer’s disease, senile dementia, and possibly Parkinson’s disease. Lithium not only protects brain cells against normal wear and tear, but also offers additional protection against a whole variety of toxic molecules, including patent medications. It can also promote brain cell regeneration and increase brain cell mass. In essence, the research suggests that lithium is a brain anti-aging nutrient.

All of these results are every bit as good as (if not better than) the data that led to dumping toxic waste (fluoride) into so many public water supplies. So why haven’t public health and safety “authorities” been pushing for further intensive research on water-borne lithium and criminal behavior?

I’m certainly not in favor of the government adding anything to pure drinking water. But if it insists on forcibly mass-medicating us through our water supply (a thoroughly un-American concept I’m 100 percent against no matter what the added substance is), why haven’t they considered adding something that might actually do some real good for people’s health and safety? Isn’t the possibility of reducing homicide, suicide, rape, robbery, burglary, theft, mental hospital admissions, and drug addiction related arrests just as important as the possibly of preventing tooth decay?

Call me pessimistic, but I suspect lithium is still being ignored because no huge, politically connected industry has enormous quantities of lithium-containing waste lying around. (In the 1940s, that’s exactly how water fluoridation began, by using up huge quantities of fluoride-containing toxic waste generated by the politically connected aluminum industry.)

But if there’s one thing we all know about the U.S. government, it’s that we shouldn’t wait for the people running it to do anything to help us, especially when we can help ourselves. So today let’s go over a few more of lithium’s benefits and I’ll tell you how you can help yourself to this valuable mineral right now.

Lithium tackles another addiction

In 30 years of nutritionally oriented practice, I’ve been told by many alcoholics and their relatives that low-dose lithium can be very helpful for both alcoholism and associated mood disorders. For “practicing” alcoholics, I recommend a trial of lithium orotate, 10 milligrams three times daily (along with diet advice, niacin, glutamine, and other supplements). I ask recovering alcoholics to try 5 milligrams, three times daily (occasionally more). The majority of these patients report improved mood and decreased desire for alcohol after about six weeks using lithium therapy.

According to one review article in the British Journal of Addiction, “both controlled and uncontrolled experiments show that symptoms of both alcoholism and affective disturbance are reduced in patients treated with lithium.”2 (All of the studies reviewed used high dose prescription lithium.)

I also often recommend direct blood relatives of alcoholics (parents, children, or siblings) consider a trial of lithium orotate, 5 milligrams two or three times daily, even if they have never noticed a mood problem. I explain that this is a “personal clinical trial,” and a safe one, that they can discontinue in six to eight weeks if they don’t feel a difference. I also ask that the individual discuss this personal clinical trial with their husband, wife, or other close household member, since I’ve found that the individual doesn’t always notice subtle (or even not-so-subtle) mood changes in himself. But immediate family members notice-particularly when the changes are for the better! I haven’t kept a count of exactly how many individuals have tried this approach over the last 30 years, but it’s probably somewhere in the vicinity of 300 to 400-maybe more. And the majority report positive changes: less depression and irritability for women, and less irritability and “temper” for men.

Can lithium help solve your health mysteries?

So far, you’ve read about how lithium can help combat mental illness, mood disorders, and chemical dependency. All of these benefits, in turn, help communities become safer places overall by reducing rates of violent crime. And, yes, increased safety does benefit you and me. But right now, let’s discuss some ways that you might be able to put lithium to work in your own life with some surprising applications for a few rather “mysterious” conditions.

By “mysterious,” I don’t mean brand-new, mutated viruses like the recent outbreak of SARS. No, the conditions I’ll go over today have been around for quite a while. But the mystery lies in the fact they each of them is still considered “incurable.” Let’s start with one of the most painful.

Fibromyalgia relief: This “last resort” could rank No. 1

This condition primarily strikes women and causes debilitating pain and stiffness. Lithium can help alleviate these symptoms without the problems associated with conventional fibromyalgia treatments, which include tranquilizer, antidepressant, and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications (which only temporarily mask the pain and sleeplessness that often occur).

One study examined three women suffering from fibromyalgia, none of whom had responded to conventional treatment. When researchers added lithium to the women’s current treatment, all three noticed a marked reduction in their symptoms.3

The authors of the study didn’t explain why they didn’t have the women discontinue their ineffective conventional treatments, but I’ve got a pretty good idea that their motives might have had something to do with the fact that the conventional treatments, as useless as they were for these women, are the “standard” protocol.

But I digress.

The gout-eliminating combination that tastes as good as it feels

You might remember reading the Health e-Tip on lithium and gout several months ago (2/3/03, subject line: “Help! My big toe is on fire!”). As the e-Tip mentioned, gout occurs when the body can’t process and eliminate excess uric acid. The result is a painful burning or stabbing sensation usually in the ball joint of the foot.

Although there are no published studies on this topic, over the years I’ve found the combination of low-dose lithium (10-15 milligrams twice daily) and vitamin C (2 grams twice daily) can be very effective in preventing recurrent attacks of gout. Vitamin C significantly reduces serum uric acid levels. Lithium makes uric acid more soluble so it doesn’t crystallize into painful “needles.” These two actions combine to significantly reduce gout attacks. If you have gout, I also recommend that you drink 32 oz. of cherry juice at the first sign of an attack. Just please make sure it’s real cherry juice–no sugar added. Although no one is sure why or how it works, studies have shown that cherry juice usually eliminates the pain of acute gout.

85 percent cluster headache relief in just two weeks

Cluster headaches are another one of those inexplicable conditions that my patients tell me always seem to come on at exactly the wrong time. In fact, they might actually be one of the most “mysterious” of the conditions I’ve listed so far since, like fibromyalgia, the cause isn’t known. They tend to attack relentlessly for weeks to months and then often go into remission for months or even years. But lithium (in relatively high doses) can significantly reduce both the severity and frequency.

One study examined lithium’s effects on 19 men with cluster headaches. Eight had rapid improvement-an average 85 percent reduction-in their “headache index” in just two weeks. Four individuals had both cluster headaches and psychiatric symptoms; these four had almost complete elimination of their headaches. The remaining seven had only a slight benefit.5

Another research group tried lithium therapy (again, relatively high quantities) for 14 individuals with cluster headaches. Five individuals had complete disappearance of their headaches, four had significant improvement, and four had no change.6

There’s no guarantee that lithium will cure your cluster headaches, but there is a good chance that it might help. With so few other options available, it’s at least worth a try.

Simple relief from those annoyingly persistent problems

Along the same lines as these mysterious conditions are a few other conditions that lithium can benefit. But these are less on the mysterious side and more in the vein of annoyingly persistent. Even so, lithium can still help in a number of ways.

One research group reported that lithium inhibits the reproduction of several viruses, including herpes simplex viruses (HSV 1, HSV 2), adenovirus (the “common cold” virus), cytomegalovirus, Epstein-Barr virus (associated with mononucleosis and many cases of chronic fatigue), and the measles virus.7

Another randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study of lithium carbonate (doses ranging from 150-900 milligrams daily) demonstrated “a consistent reduction in the number of herpes episodes per month, the average duration of each episode, the total number of infection days per month, and the maximum symptom severity. In contrast, treatment with placebo resulted in an increase in three of the four severity measures.”8

In addition to lithium, selenium, lysine, and other nutrients can also help suppress the reproduction of herpes simplex (and other viruses) and speed the recovery process should an active infection occur. I tend to think it’s better-and safer-to follow this approach (using small quantities of several effective nutrients rather than a larger quantity of just one), so nearly 10 years ago I worked with Bio-Tech Pharmacal to create a useful anti-herpes formula. We combined low-dose lithium with selenium, lysine, vitamin C, olive leaf extract, and other nutrients into two formulas, one (called HPX) for prevention of herpes simplex, and the other (called HPX2) for treatment of outbreaks. Those who have used it tell me it does the job, cutting down or eliminating recurrent herpes infections and/or helping them heal more quickly when they do occur. HPX and HPX2 are both available through natural food stores and compounding pharmacies.

A quick end to a Grave disease

Hyperthyroidism can be persistent and difficult to treat. It comes on either very suddenly or very gradually-so gradually, you might not even notice that something is really wrong until the symptoms become severe. Graves’ disease is one of the common names for hyperthyroidism. In this condition, the immune system disrupts the functioning of the thyroid gland, causing it to become enlarged and to secrete too much hormone.

Mainstream treatments completely shut down the production of thyroid hormone using dangerous patent medicines. But lithium can get to the root of the problem much more safely.

In 1972, Mayo Clinic researchers published the first clinical investigation of lithium treatment for Graves’ disease.9   Using high-dose lithium for 10 individuals, they reported that thyroid hormone levels fell by 20-30 percent within five days.

Twenty-six years later, in a review of more than 10 successful trials of lithium therapy for Graves’ disease, the authors wrote: “a small number of studies have documented its [lithium’s] use in the treatment of patients with Graves’ disease… it’s efficacy and utility as an alternative anti-thyroid [treatment] are not widely recognized…”10 They also note lithium’s rapid effect: “Lithium normalizes [thyroid hormone] levels in one to two weeks…” But they also caution that “toxicity precludes its use as a first-line or long-term therapeutic agent.” If they’d just added flaxseed oil and vitamin E to their treatment, they would have basically eliminated the risk of toxicity.

Lithium’s benefits: Ripe for the picking

Perhaps the budding evidence about lithium and brain protection will spark even more interest in researching this mineral. Maybe researchers will accumulate enough evidence to prove that lithium can slow or even reverse brain aging. And perhaps researchers will conclude that putting very low dose lithium into drinking water to reduce violent crime is even more important than adding fluoride to prevent tooth decay.

But I won’t hold my breath. Lithium isn’t patentable, so I doubt that patent-medicine companies will even consider funneling huge amounts of research dollars into it. And if the patent-medicine companies aren’t interested in it, it isn’t likely to be “approved” for these or other uses any time soon. But remember, “approval” does not ensure safety or effectiveness; it just means that procedures have been followed, forms have been filled out, and money-lots and lots of money-has changed hands.

Now for the good news: Just because lithium won’t be formulated into the next wonder drug and isn’t likely to be making the headlines of your local news, that certainly doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy all of its benefits-from brain anti-aging to headache relief–right now. Low-dose lithium supplements are available in some natural food stores.

If you decide to give lithium a try, as with any new treatment or preventive measure (even an all-natural one), it’s always a good idea to consult with a physician skilled and knowledgeable in natural medicine as part of your decision.

New Protein May Protect Against Flu, SDSU Professor Finds

Aired 7/12/12

A professor at San Diego State has made an exciting discovery. She’s found a human-made protein is able to block the flu virus in mice.

Joy Phillips, an assistant professor at SDSU’s Donald P. Shiley BioScience Center, took a human-made protein that previously had been used in studies to make vaccines stronger and decided to test it by itself to see what it would do.

She took mice who had the flu and injected them with the protein, EP67. She found surprising results.

“When you treated mice with EP67, within a 24 hour window of when they got the flu, they didn’t get sick,” she said. “They still had been infected with the virus, so they would be protected from a later infection, but they did not show the normal signs of illness.”

Her team then took it a step further, giving the mice a deadly dose of flu and waiting a full day before treating them.

“Mice that were treated a full day after being infected with a lethal dose of flu were 100 percent protected from death, none of those mice died,” Phillips said. “And they didn’t even look particularly sick.”

They also injected mice with a lethal dose of flu and did not treat them with EP67. When the control mice were dying, Phillips said the EP67 mice “looked great.”

These results suggest an EP67 injection—administered after exposure to the flu—could keep you from getting sick. But, as Phillips is quick to point out, so far her results are only from studies with mice, and there’s a long way to go until EP67 can be tested on humans.

Still, she said, there are several things about her findings that are reasons for excitement.

Above: Colorized influenza A virus.

For one, EP67 is not actually fighting the flu, but instead wakes up the immune system and alerts it to the flu’s presence. Usually when you have the flu, you carry the virus around for a few days before you show any symptoms. During that time, the virus can spread and your immune system hasn’t started working to fight the virus yet.

If EP67 spurs your immune system to action, it could stop you from spreading the virus in those first few days.

Phillips also said the fact that the protein does not directly fight the flu is good news, because it doesn’t give the flu virus a chance to adapt.

“Therapeutics that directly target an organism, those organisms then evolve resistance,” she said. “So if we have something that doesn’t touch the virus at all, there’s no expectation that the virus is going to evolve ways around this.”

Another reason for excitement: the immune system responds in basically the same way, no matter what infection you have. This means EP67 could work not just against the flu, but on a wide variety of viruses, bacteria and fungi.

Phillips said her team already has data showing the protein is protective against bacterial and fungal infections. She said it could even work when the infecting agent isn’t known, like the SARS virus.

But there are many questions that need to be resolved. Phillips said she must confirm that EP67 will work against other strains of flu.

“There’s no reason to expect it won’t, but it still absolutely has to be tested,” she said.

Beyond that, she would like to work with other scientists who study other diseases to see how far EP67’s protective properties spread. And before EP67 can be tested on humans, there is a lot of safety testing that needs to be done.

Because the protein seems to alert the immune system to the flu virus more quickly, another key question is whether an EP67 injection would make you feel sicker faster. But Phillips said that’s tricky to solve.

“That’s hard to answer because it’s mice, and they’re not really forthcoming with how they’re feeling,” she said.

This is Mimi.  Pretty exciting, isn’t it? To find some real help when we are in need of strength to kick off pathogens?  Where can we get this EP67?

Here is a more technical article if you should want it:

Emotional components, fight or flight and keys to Multiple Sclorosis

Today, we made progress with a client who has been diagnosed with  Multiple Sclerosis using natural means, eastern medicine diagnosis, homeopath, frequency checking for behavioral qualities of pathogens, supplementation and diet.

First, long term, we stabilize the physical body with all of our clients using diet, life style, and removing things such as sugars, grains and other carbohydrates which have been creating an environment for festering microbial growth.   We also do a behavioral process with each individual, where we remove behaviors which inhibit lack of awareness, numbness and denial, designed to increase  internal body communication. This internal freedom works synergistically with the life style changes so the person begins to regain freedom, ease and energy.  Energy breeds confidence and strength can begin to be built.

Once physical stability is established, the person has more strength to view their individual behavioral pattern.  This combination of gaining strength and clearing the tissue needs to be done slowly because the person needs to gain control and retrain the mechanisms of digestion of mental/emotional events and the way they think about themselves and their issues that previously got numbed out.  In addition, there are significant toxins that are being moved out of the body which need to go through a body which has been dedicated to being shut down and unaware in order to be comfortable with difficult present under the surface.

Once the individual and their body has commitment to the process of removing the debris and seeing themselves clearly, they are ready to face the difficult behaviors they were previously avoided.  In this process, we see significant emotional coping mechanisms such as defiance, defensiveness and un-cooperativeness.  This signifies growth of their internal expression that something is wrong which was previously squelched.  Indeed it is progress.  It is up to the client, at this point, to correctly identify the irritation as within (responsibility), rather than outwardly manifested (blame) for the process of healing to continue.

This process of taking responsibility is happening at the same time as the toxins are beginning to flow out of all the septic areas of the body.  This drain is possible because the diet and life style are working and the congestion is clearing.  This septic fluid drain and toxin release can include highly sensitive substances, heavy metals, and even living parasitic colonies!  The energy the toxins are charged with tend to make the person believe that the discomfort is getting bigger not smaller because it is now “all around” them as it drains down the open channels for exit.  (something that your body has been yearning for)

Toxic release is a very “wiggy” and difficult time  where the individual will need to know how to have skills of slowing down by increase protein, traffic control and being able to rest in the middle by starting and stopping.   It is a period of time which is made better by clear-headedness, strength and self-responsibility when everything that you kept so carefully contained feels like it is running a muck.   Usually, this must be a very slow, steady process requiring attention, patience and self-worth to go through the process. The prize is that we can now regain the helm and we have the need strength and courage to resolve the events that sent them running away!  Resolution, acceptance and patience are all keys to personal inner peace.  Health is a symptom of inner peace which my personal goal for my clients.  We work it from all the angles at once.

During the behavioral phase, we address the behavioral pattern internally with herbs and homeopathics to cleanse the tissues that have been repressing.  This allows an internal readjustment of the mechanisms that have been holding “bad things” out of view.  The person must have the courage to walk back up to them and process them, thus leading to a tremendous freedom and release of pent up energy.  (honestly, the events are so small in relation to the amount of energy it took to repress them.  Usually the dealings of a 3 year old without any skills for resolution)  Once resolution is understood, the tissue comes back to normal energetically and the under lying pathogens can release.

At this point in the process, we continue supporting the clarity of the body with diet.  We also begin to introduce detoxifier because the drainage system is now working well.  We used garlic and other anti-microbials such as olive leaf to remove the deeper long term infections.  This can include low level,  residual diseases from childhood that haven’t completely released due to going back to life too soon after an illness.  In this case of MS, with the removal and inhibition of the major amount of the bacterial colonies through the use of diet, candida inhibitors such as olive leaf, and antibiotics we were able to reveal the hard core levels of infection at the nerves which were more difficult to identify until the numbness was restored to feeling and the majority of the bacteria that was attributing to the numbness was moved away.   Many rounds of antibiotics did not clear this deeper infection due to the biofilms involved.

As the deeper cleaning of the tissue surfaces were achieved by inhibiting all fruit, nuts and grains, (lictins) we released enough stress from the body to allow it to address the deeper bacterial infections, including the mucosa membranes expressing and as ulcerative colitis and deeper pariferal nerves and mylin sheath damage relating to the Multiple Sclerosis.  They were all strongly relieved.

The client’s neurologist gave her strong indications that although there was nothing he could do for her, she appeared to be much better off than the other people he sees in his specialized practice on neurodegenerative diseases.  This gave the client resolve to continue staying conscious.  This resolve that she deserves to get well and be well is the one thing that is able to give her the strength to continue through the process.

At this point, because she is strong enough to open herself and look at herself, we are able to get into these deep areas of infection directly on the nerves.   Without the candida nest, we can see clearly the tissue at the basis of the disease.  We found a bacteria on the nerves.  Pulled in by the frequency of the nerves themselves or what is running through them which might have an energy component such as overwhelm.   We have done frequency checks on many bacterium so that we can find similarities.  We found two bacterias working together.  There is the fusobacterium and the leprocy bacterium.  We will address them homeopathically, remove the behavioral pattern in the nerves,

Further, using Eastern Medicine, we realized that the gut mucosa was severely inhibiting the production of Vitamin K which is produced in the Large Intestine and lungs and gets shut down when the organism is overwhelmed.  Vit K which is part of the parasympathetic processes of the Large Intestine, lungs, and bladder and stops when we go into sympathetic mode.   It can be assumed that long-term stress prevents the making of Vit K which controls the growth of fungus.  Further, the fungus grows in and over the bacterium, giving the bacterium and the energetic vibrations of the unprocessed stress memories a place to hide, a way to cope with its presence and numbness.

This very energetic and protective environment is hiding the bad bugs and preventing the immune system from being effective.  The numbness prevents the consciousness from understanding that it is very important to remove the disease.  Meanwhile, alarms, silent to the consciousness are constantly telling the body it is not okay while the individual is pretending not to hear it and going on like nothing has happened.  This overriding the communication is significant.  Listen to the truth.  Have the courage to see what is up with your body and your life when it says that something is wrong.  Telling yourself there is nothing you can do about it will be taken literally by the immune system.  This is when people die, by putting out to the body the command to “ignore it”.  Ignoring things is a bad plan!

Along with the basic protocols described above to undo the layers of numbing and protection, in this case we are proceeding with supplementation of  Vit K 100 mg daily.
We don’t want to placate the system by supplementation for too long.  It is far better to  deal with the sympathetic dominance, restart the gut, and stimulate life which will be reflected in many processes, one of them being Vit K production.

Turning off fight of flight to regain parasympathetic nerve signals is essential.  We are using energy healing techniques such as “switching”, eft tapping, and BodyTalk to clear out old signals and have the body reconnect and reevaluate where it is right now.  It is essential that the body deals with the digestion of the stress instead of running away.  It is also important that the triggers of stress and the “internal alarms” be reset to off.  It is very uncomfortable to have a car alarm going off in your nervous system for years but we have found that this is the case and turning that off is essential.

Reconnecting the communication within the entire track of the vegas nerve is important for communication between the cerebral and enteric nervous systems.  The head and the gut get cut off from communication and restoring this cuts the “noise” within the body and restores the peace.  Another place that can be very internally noisy to the nerves are the joints themselves.  A good structural adjustment with someone who understands the joints is very valuable.  Getting those adjustments to hold will be a process of clearing the bacterium and showing yourself who is in charge!

Conclusion:

The issue of loosing our immunity through overwhelm and stress is not to be ignored.  The proper function of delicate structures such as the mucoso in the bladder, lungs, large intestine all are essential for you as an individual to protect.  Health can only be held as long as these functions are working!

It makes sense to me that if we didn’t have antibiotics, these bacterias would be as ugly as leporacy and the plague used to be.   Yet what if these types of bacteria still fester in our modern world?  What if the depth of our nerve tissue, untouched by antibiotics, hidden behind biofilm and overwhelm is being ignored because we want to be “comfortable” rather than being honest?    We conclude that

  • modern medicine hasn’t learned to clean the residual bacterias completely.
  • The leftover residual diseases from childhood are a matrix for more powerful diseases to build up.
  • lifestyle of fast foods, limited activity and peer pressure lifestyles inhibit healing.

I believe that a surgically precise strike on the body’s bio-film fortresses is necessary.  That releasing the negatively impacting expression in the nerves is essential.  I believe that it is a consciousness choice.  I believe that changing our choices, changing our minds, can indeed change our health by allowing the entire expression of stress to simply drop out of the body through its natural drainage channels.   Living in this world in peace!  That’s still a choice and it takes place every milisecond in the body.  Start changing a few of them and it makes a big difference!

It is the nerves that change when overwhelm is present.  It is the specific frequency of the expression within the nerves that creates the distress signal over time.  This then attracts a specific bacterium because there is a field of energy created around the nerves that the immune system cannot penetrate.   From our work, when we turn off the energy in the nerves, the  immune system is able to remove the bacterium.  If the person’s pattern of behavior is changed, the heavy metals and microorganisms  fall away like the iron filings on a piece of cardboard with no magnet behind it!  Remove the magnet, remove the disease!

It is what we promote, create and allow that makes the difference.  It also has to do with sustaining, such as overwhelm, paralysis, doubt, fear, etc.  It is most important what the consciousness chooses to is expressed through the nerves.  When this is sustained within the nerves for a prolonged period of time the immune system is rendered unusable to this area and the pathogens that are similar to the frequency will thrive.  They were always there.  It is the environment of the consciousness in the body that builds the disease and can remove it.  Yet, we do lots of work to remove it from the other direction as well.

The herbs and supplements help the individual get to it the site of disease and give them the strength to repair it and the practitioners lead the way and can lift quite a bit themselves.  Ultimately, the client learns to do it themselves.  Its a process.

Eastern Medicine:
Eastern diagnosis is different in that it looks for minute and subtle clues in the pulse and behavioral expression of the individual.  Homeopathy too looks for the clues we see in the behavior as a hint for what might be happening inside.  All these factors are indicators or clues of what to look for.    The bacteria can be seen in the affect of an individual as “bitterness”, sour grapes, no one understands me or hears me.  Overwhelm, no one can do anything about us/me.  Self-expression is blocked from within.

There seems to be a behavioral component to “hiding the bad stuff” over a long period of time.  People are in denial when their lives  don’t live up to their internal standards.  Their lives may contain bad things that they can’t do anything about.   These unresolved issues get supressed until they can find an answer.  They start “seeking” but often want to forget what is so hurtful for their long term comfort.  All this causes numbness and the issue must be uncovered and strenth and self-worth built so that the individual has the expression of the issue and has the strength to ask for  help to improve themselves.  The doctors alone can’t get in there if the person is hiding their issue under a bio-film. The biofilm and protection must be removed.

Neurodegeneration in general may be caused by any sustained stress.   It might vary internally from one person to another.  Behaviorally, one condition might attract a different pathogen, being attracted by different patterns of internal frequency of emotion within the nerves.

Possible insight to multiple sclerosis and other neurodegenerative diseases that destroy nerve cell “insulation”

Using myelin-forming primary nerve tissue cultures (top) and mice genetically manipulated to lack two key immune system cells (bottom), researchers led by Rockefeller University microbiologist/cell biologist Anura Rambukkana showed that Mycobacterium leprae, the bacterium that causes leprosy, destroys the protective myelin sheath that surrounds nerve fibers (right-hand panels).

In the May 3 issue of Science, scientists at Rockefeller University and New York University School of Medicine report that the nerve damage that leads to a loss of sensation and disability of people with leprosy occurs in the early stages of infection. (Reprints are available here.)
The nerve damage, a hallmark of leprosy previously thought to be a byproduct of the immune system’s response to the leprosy bacteria, now seems to be a direct result of the leprosy bug attaching itself to specialized nerve cells called Schwann cells, the glial, or supporting, cells of the peripheral nervous system (PNS).
The findings suggest that the body’s immune response does not play a significant role in the early stage of neurological injury. The damage is characterized by the disruption of the myelin sheath, the insulation on nerve cell connections that helps transmit rapid signals between the brain and the peripheral organs, for example, skin and muscles. Damage to myelin causes loss of sensation, disability and paralysis.
Using laboratory cell tissue cultures and mice genetically manipulated to lack two key immune system cells, the research team, led by Rockefeller University microbiologist/cell biologist Anura Rambukkana, Ph.D., showed that Mycobacterium leprae (M. leprae), the bacterium that causes leprosy, destroys the protective myelin sheath that surrounds nerve fibers and then hides out in the supporting cells that enclose non-myelin nerve fibers, poised to initiate later attacks.
“What we show here is a novel mechanism of inducing demyelination by a bacterial pathogen,” says Rambukkana, principal author and research assistant professor at Rockefeller. “This may unravel clues for early molecular events of neurodegeneration processes in other diseases, such as multiple sclerosis, which we currently know nothing about.”
“By using this bacteria we will be able to obtain novel insight not only into the mechanism of the early demyelination process, but also how the complex molecular architecture of the myelinated fiber is disrupted,” adds Rambukkana.
Using a “co-culture” system developed by co-author James Salzer, M.D., Ph.D., at the NYU School of Medicine, in which myelinated nerves form normally in cell culture, the researchers found that M. leprae produced significant damage to the myelin sheaths 24 hours after attaching to the nerves. Myelin damage is the earliest effect observed, followed by the degeneration of nerve axon that carries the nerve impulses. M. leprae does not harm any other parts of the cell, and causes no signs of cell death.
The researchers found that, unexpectedly, M. leprae does not need to enter the cell to cause degeneration of the myelin sheath.
“This suggests that binding of M. leprae to the surface of the myelin sheath is sufficient to induce myelin breakdown, presumably by activating signals inside the cell,”says Salzer. “Such signals could also be activated in other diseases that cause demyelination.”
The researchers also showed that M. leprae does not need to be alive to demyelinate nerve cells. Similar results were obtained after cultured Schwann cells were exposed to bacteria that had been killed with radiation and to fractions of the bacterium’s cell wall.
Previous research by Rambukkana, Salzer and their colleagues implicated a major component of the bacterium’s cell wall called PGL-1 in its predilection for peripheral nerves, and they now propose that PGL-1 is a crucial cell wall molecule directly involved in nerve damage in leprosy.
The mouse model the researchers studied, called a “Rag-1 knockout,” is genetically altered to lack mature B and T cells (B cells are responsible for producing the infection-fighting proteins called antibodies, while T cells help regulate the body’s immune response). As in the cell culture model, direct administration of both M. leprae and its cell wall to the peripheral nerves of Rag-1 mice caused significant myelin damage, providing clues for early nerve injury in patients before the immune system comes into play.
Schwann cells also play a significant secondary role in providing support for the various growth factors during the development of the spinal motor neurons and sensory neurons. Thus, Schwann cells play a wider role not only in the normal development of the nerve cells in the PNS, but also in their regeneration.
Nerve cells in the PNS are able to regenerate after injury, unlike their counterparts in the central nervous system (CNS). Examination of myelinated and non-myelinated nerve cells infected with M. leprae revealed an interesting survival strategy of this bacterium. As the damaged myelinated nerve cells repair themselves by generating new nonmyelinating Schwann cells after attack, M. leprae sequesters itself in these nonmyelinated nerve cells, waiting for a chance to attack again, once they multiply and escape from these cells. Rambukkana hypothesizes that this phenomenon accounts for the lapsing/remitting characteristic of leprosy.
M. leprae is known to cause debilitating neurological injury in humans, but the clinical manifestation occurs years after a slow infectious process. According to Rambukkana, information about the pre-clinical mechanisms in M. leprae-induced demyelination may allow researchers to develop therapeutics and common diagnostic tests for early detection of demylenating diseases of both infectious origin and unknown etiology, such as multiple sclerosis and Guillain-Barré syndrome.
The PNS consists of all the nerves that fan out from the CNS and innervate the muscles, skin and internal organs. The myelin sheath enables the axon to greatly improve the reliability and speed of the electric impulse, much like insulation on electrical wires. When myelin is damaged, the nerve fibers are no longer insulated and nerve impulses cannot be conducted efficiently. Therefore, the knowledge gained by such M. leprae-induced myelin damage in the early infectious process provides valuable insights into the pathologic mechanisms of early neurodegenerative diseases in general.
Rambukkana’s and Salzer’s co-authors are George Zanazzi, B.S., at NYU and Nikos Tapinos, M.D., Ph.D., at Rockefeller.
This research was funded in part by National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and the National Institute of Neurological Diseases and Stroke, both part of the federal government’s National Institutes of Health, and the UNDP/World bank/WHO Special Program for Research in Tropical Diseases.

creating beneficial bacteria

Wouldn’t it be fabulous to resolve those uncomfortable feelings that come up from time to time.  It is not difficult to complete those feelings once you understand the “game” and how to play it.

we were in one of the deepest binds I have ever seen with my own experience. Yet I have trust In the Light to come though with a solution.

Here is the result. the light showed us that we have the capacity to ask the conditions of our body to change. That we can say,

Light show me how to resolve this.

It did show us. (With proportions that have made my jaw drop).
for years, I have been trying to clear a candida situation that is clearly in my gut and brain.

I took fungal forte, I cut all sugar, I came out of hiding. Yet, it didn’t change until now. What is the difference? That would be the way I hold my entire consciousness.

Am I a victim? Or am I big enough to be the change agent?  Are the situations too big so that I have to back away or can I get in there and tough it out.  I can.  (but I didn’t know I could)  There is great wisdom to completing the feelings and situations and then once again reaching out to our people and circulating.

What I was experiencing when I had those dark feelings that were uncomfortable was this:

I was having a feeling that I needed to digest and process ON TOP OF  many other feelings and thoughts that I haven’t yet processed.  It is the same as all the unattended details.  Tend to them!!  Because new ones will come up and the old ones need to be complete.  If you get done, do some older ones.  It’s like magic!  All the plumbing opens and the sun comes out.  We have our energy back.

The personality won’t do too much except make myself have a social position better but that might require hiding so I didn’t resolve anything!   What really helps is how I hold myself inside.  This causes frustration and anger with ourselves at some level and creates colonies of energy that reflect this feeling.  This is not for us.

Today, the light was very clear. Hold your body bacteria in the light so that it becomes a powerhouse. The body is 33% bacteria and there is some symbiotic yeast in that mix. Let’s make that positive!

How do we do that? By being more aware. It isn’t just how we act that changes us. It’s how we work our vehicle we call the body. Do we give ourselves love? Do we eat for our cells and how they live or do we eat for comfort and concept. If we stick with the cells, we will be rewarded. I know this is true because I have focused on getting stronger and I have been led to the cells.  The cells (and spiritual energy that creates all this) leads me.

Now after many years of detoxing the residual diseases, confronting the genetic messages and taking care of my cells, the next level has unveiled itself. I need to transform the inner bacterial culture. Revive it to peace.

What is new for me? I am used to cells and organs, I know about body communications and interactions of our will onto the quantum world. For me in this moment, this inner kingdom is what has my attention with a promise that our strength doesn’t just come from us but from keeping our joint venture partners (our beneficial bacteria) . . .happy.

So, what to do?

Keep your eyes on the positive. Feed your friends good and useful attention.
Keep your eyes on the good. There is always good in every situation. Find it and increase it.
Send energy to your partners. It is essential that your bacteria gets that you are there for them.

I know this sounds hilarious. I promise it is not a joke. Cells need us. Our microbes do to!

I believe that the wise and holy men of old, those that brought frankincense and merr, also brought yogurt. By being in an intensive state of prayer, then light becomes more and more compressed within the body. Things will happen that weren’t there before. New things. Even solutions for the events that need to be reconciled. This can be done in groups or alone. The difference is that this is no nonsense state of goodness and nothing but goodness. It is a cut above what we can do now and there will always be more.

How does this relate to my life right now?

Look for the highest good.
Keep your mind open to the fact that you can have even more Light than you ever expected to have. That the quality of goodness can get more intense. Then, it’s time for me to suck up my guts and go there.

On the way, I met many stories about how I didnt make it last time. I kept flashing these failures before me at rapid rate. I thought they were in the current moment for a long time. Then I realized that it was all theater to get my attention. I resolved it, rewrote the stories so that they supported me and kept going. Eventually, they subsided. I learned how to speak to my innate wisdom. I learned how to relax and unravel.

And. Here we are.
Nothing much has changed ink the world. I still have bills to pay.
I have moved from this world to another one. I have made a quantum leap. It worked!

Trehalose – a versatile, natural and healthy sugar

You may not have heard about Trehalose but I’m sure you will have heard about diabetes – in a strange way they are connected. Trehalose is a relatively recent discovery and just 12 years ago Trehalose was confined to the research labs and academics. TREHALOSE is NATURAL and CONTAINS NO CHEMICALS. The breakthrough came in Japan about 15 years ago when a scientist managed to get an enzyme to convert simple starch into Trehalose. This breakthrough enabled Trehalose to reach many more places and today it is used widely in the cosmetic industry, skincare, food preparation and the freezing of living organisms for transportation or research – called cryo-preservation. Trehalose has the ability to stabilise proteins and that’s one of its major uses in the food industry. Trehalose was first used in Japan to help in the preparation of sushi where it helps with stability, flavour and shelf life. Learn about Trehalose and how it can aid healthful living. It is a viable, natural alternative to sucrose (white table sugar) and research suggests that it is a good alternative natural sweetener and much better than Aspartame or Nutra Sweet – oh and an added benefit is that you will have better energy levels throughout the day.trehalose healthy safe sugar alternative diabetes

When eaten it has a very low effect on the blood glucose level and hence is very useful for diabetics.

Due to its ability to stabilise protein it may also have some benefits in terms of aiding neurological degenerative diseases.

TRE – Trauma and Tension Release Exercises

We have all seen a dog dreaming that they are running, right? That is TRE.  It is a natural response to trauma that fires up the nerves and releases them.  If it doesn’t, we are frozen in a web of responses that say “Don’t show it, don’t act, don’t scare people” or whatever it is.  Basically, if we try to over ride this stress release, we end up with unhealthy contortion in our body.

TRE was discovered when an insightful mind watched the kids shivering in a bomb shelter.  Why didn’t the adults shiver?  They do actually but they stop it.  The kids got over the trauma much better and the adults didn’t.  There is a very small window of when to get the trauma out.  Once you pack it into your cellular structure, it will be very hard to get it back.  That is what TRE is designed to do.  It gives you some room to get the trauma out of your tissue and through the plumbing of your body once again.

When I practice TRE, it is simply exercises that tire my gut’s response to hold on and it comes out.  Sometimes I cry, other times, I shake but it isn’t really connected with anything yet.  I just let myself be a dog that is dreaming, and stuff moves out of me.  The more I do it, the better things are.  There you go!

Watch the video of the concept.

In conclusion words from the technique’s founder David Berceli:

The human species is a living paradox.  We have a biological imperative to let go of tension and an egotistical refusal to do so.  Because most stress, anxiety, trauma and tension recovery has relied very heavily on psychology and ego centered interventions, they are sometimes only moderately effective.

Science is now searching for a new paradigm for stress and tension recovery that can address multi-cultural and national levels of tension, anxiety, stress and PTSD.  Cross-studies of multiple fields of science such as neuro-biology are discovering that this new paradigm for healing can be found right within the recesses of the human body itself.

Just as the human organism is designed to experience and endure difficult episodes, it is also designed to recover from these experiences.  The body contains all the anatomical and physiological mechanisms necessary to restore itself to optimal health after the stress or danger has passed.  In fact, recovering from tension is genetically encoded in us to complete one process and begin something new as a part of our unending cycle of evolution.  Stress and trauma recovery is moving towards physiological interventions that capitalize on the human biological compulsion to resolve tension while simultaneously circumventing the ego’s fear of the recovery process.

A note from Mimi:

I see so often that people can’t move forward because they haven’t completed the level that they are on.  So much of my work is about completion of something so old that it doesn’t even relate to us any more.  Yet, it must be found and completed like getting our sweater caught on a twig.

We already have what we need.  The diaphragm and our breath already know how to sob when something happens.   We just seem to resist it.  For me, I wanted to be invisible.  I had a belief that if I didn’t do anything emotional, I would be safer.  My family didn’t encourage me to have my feelings.    TRE is the “little push” that we need to get the functions of emotional and mental release started once again.   These functions are a vital part of that completion that we need to be done with that twig we are caught on and have the energy to move forward.  It allows us to let go and get closer to the release we so desperately need in so many areas of our lives.

What really got me interested in TRE is how far my friends got in just a few weeks.  I had to dive in if I was going to keep up with them!  They were all of a sudden more fluid, juicy and alive.  All for a bit of shaking?  I am going to try this now!

There is a book available on Amazon as well:

Here are the basic exercises.  The practice can go much beyond this.  These were given at a workshop so treasure them!   Find exercises here.

20 Reasons To Be In Your Body

Being in your body:
Increases pleasure. If your body is numb – and you don’t reside within it, you can’t enjoy pleasure. How intense can an orgasm be if I barely feel it? How much pleasure can I receive from the soft touch of someone who loves me on my arm, if I’m not even aware of my arm?

Ramps up your vitality. When you feel more sensation, you feel more alive. Yes, you notice the little aches and pains of the body more, but this also translates into feeling loads of intense joy.

Helps you tweak what’s not working. When you’re living in your body, you notice the subtle messages your body sends you. When you hear them – even as soft whispers, you can tweak your body movement – or even something bigger in your life – like ending a relationship that isn’t working or saying no to a job you don’t want to do.

Keeps your body safe. When you’re not in your body, you might overdo it. You might ignore the first warning signs of disease. Pain is meant to protect you from danger. Feeling pain is good because it can keep you safe if you listen to the signals and “tweak” your movement, posture, or life circumstances in reaction to the pain.

Is the first step to self-healing. The body is the first thing to get knocked out of balance if your whole health (which includes your relationships, your work/life purpose, how you express yourself creatively, your sexuality, your environment, your financial situation, your spirituality, and your mental health) is out of whack. If you’re not aware of the sensations of your body, you can’t self-correct and begin the process of healing yourself.

Cultivates a deeper emotional connection. This allows emotions to be experienced, embodied, and quickly released, increasing emotional agility and fostering the ability to quickly let go of negative emotions and fully enjoy positive emotions.

Helps you make conscious choices. When you feel undecided, get in your body. The body will tell you what to do.

Keeps you more grounded. You won’t feel chaotic, spinny, buzzy, or floaty the way you might when you’re in your head.

Helps you sleep. When you tap into body sensation, you can help turn off the mind.

ROCKS your sex life. It’s much more fun to get it on when you’re actually in your body.

Helps you be in relationship with yourself and others. When your body is in relationship with someone else’s body, you’re communicating on a whole different level.

Guides you in being able to read other people’s bodies. There’s a conversation going on without words. You’ll get a better sense of who that person really is, how they’re feeling, and what you need to know about that person.

Helps you feel the sensuality of the world. When you’re in your body, you’ll feel things deeper, smell things more vibrantly, taste things more fully, hear things on a whole new level, and touch with more sensitivity.

Helps you dance through life. When you feel more sensation, you tap into the joy of even subtle movements of the body. Every aspect of your life can become a dance.

Helps you lose weight. When you’re paying attention to sensation, your food is more enjoyable, you’ll notice when your belly feels full, you’ll appreciate the yumminess of your body, and you’ll probably eat less and lose weight.

Helps you see life as art. When you enliven sensation, you see the world with fresh eyes that can turn even the most mundane thing into art.

Improves confidence and sex appeal. When you live in your skin, you can’t help but shake your hips, throw back your shoulders, and step into your sexy greatness.

Awakens intuition. When you feel your body, you’re more able to tap into gut sensations and other somatic feelings that will help guide your path.

Helps you reclaim your personal power. You’ll feel the visceral sensation of your power right in your belly, and you can use that feeling to stop giving your power away and bring it back into your body.

Helps you create stronger boundaries. You’ll learn to be able to recognize the difference between your body and someone else’s body so you can erect personal boundaries that increase your capacity for love and empathy, while also protecting you from energy vampires who long to suck you dry.

Mike’s Career

Michael is attending the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park NY and will be graduating with his 2-year AA degree on July 7th, 2012.  (19 yrs) http://www.ciachef.edu/

He sent me to a website of the 50 top restaurants.  When I opened the website, it was the 50 top restaurants of the world!  Of the top 10, only one was in the USA and that is where he got his job.  He calls it his “dream job”.  With Daniel Boulud.  http://www.danielnyc.com/

Update:  2/17/15

A lot has happened in a short 3 year period of time.  Mike made a few job changes because there was no upward promotion in their systems.

He has been at La Bernadine for about a year.  He is enjoying it.  They respect their people and work directly with them.  It’s so simple!  Other people don’t get that respect is going to deliver what you want!  Now he has found it. (by working really hard)

La Bernadin and Erik Ripert, just last summer celebrated a rating of best business lunch in NYC.  Here they are popping the champaign.  Mike is in there somewhere at age of 21 years.

Sydney, his partner,  is working for Facebook at the NYC campus preparing food for the employees and guests.  They have FUN!!!

What’s up for the Future?

There is a chance that she could work up within this organization.  This is a great company to be with for security, great hours, and benefits.  Who knows,  maybe it will lead them to San Francisco?

I still have  hopes to take the family on vacation to Europe.  I would love to taste France with a french chef in the family.  I also would love to go to one of the best restaurants in the world, Noma in Copenhagen.  Mike says he has a friend from school that went to work there right after college.  Courage!

Light and love to their careers and relationship.

A venue for study. Cell.com

If you have any interest in your body, your consciousness, your health and how it all works, this journal has made great strides in bringing together innovation.

Check it out at www.cell.com

On the cover: In this issue, Wang et al. (pp. 1001–1014) identify a differentiation checkpoint that eliminates hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) in response to DNA breakage and telomere dysfunction. Executed by BATF, the checkpoint impairs self-renewal of damaged HSCs by the induction of lymphoid differentiation. On the cover, the pool of HSCs is represented by the feathers of the bird. Damaged stem cells—the red feathers—are removed by activation of the BATF-dependent differentiation checkpoint (black), which leads to changes in tissue composition and molting. The paper-cutting artist Yumaahi Maki created the cover collage with a combination of Japanese paper under the scientific direction of Yohei Morita and Lenhard Rudolph.
