FOOD! Its such a natural way to get what we need.

Hi,
See recipe below for pumpkin seed banana bread.  I just read that melatonin forms in our bodies if we have adequate proteins.   That helps us sleep well.  The green pumpkin seeds are a delicious snack, too.  Also, try chia seeds and buckwheat as complete proteins. (see info below ).  Chia is supposed to also help folks with thyroid conditions.  Just check blood test for allergies.

Also know that tiny seeds will create more estrogen in the body.  If you have a problem in that direction, go with big nuts and seeds like coconut.

Pumpkin seeds / pepitas – Eating the green, hulled, pumpkin seeds (also called pepitas) may promote prostate health, protection for men’s bones, anti-inflammatory benefits for those with arthritis, and help lower cholesterol. Pumpkin seeds are a good source of the essential fatty acids, potassium, phosphorous, magnesium, manganese, zinc, iron, and copper, protein, and vitamin K.
Pumpkin Seed Protein Powder -grind your pumpkin seeds in a coffee grinder

Pumpkin Seeds:

Rich in phosphorus, magnesium and manganese and is also a good source of other minerals including zinc, iron and copper.
A high source of protein and vitamin K.
A good source of favorable plant sterols.
Also a rich source of omega-6 EFA and omega-9. Pumpkin Seed Protein Powder is already being considered as one of the best products among organic foods.

Nuts and seeds are extremely nutrient-dense. They provide generous amounts of calories, fats, complex carbohydrates, protein, vitamins, minerals and fiber. Trace minerals like magnesium, zinc, selenium and copper are important but may be under-consumed in today’s largely processed Western diet, and even in some plant-based diets. Nuts and seeds are a reliable and delicious source of these essential nutrients. Plus, more than just a way to meet basic nutrient needs, nuts and seeds have been shown to protect against disease. Phytochemicals, bioactive compounds that help fight illness, in nuts and seeds include ellagic acid, flavonoids, phenolic compounds, luteolin, isoflavones and tocotrienols. Nuts also contain plant sterols, thought to help keep cholesterol levels in check and reduce cancer risk.

The world’s healthiest nuts and seeds include:
Almonds – Almonds are a good source of protein, vitamin E, manganese, magnesium, copper, vitamin B2 (riboflavin), and phosphorus. Almonds are also concentrated in protein; a quarter-cup contains more protein than the typical egg. Although one-quarter cup of almonds contains about 18 grams of fat, most of it (11 grams) is heart-healthy monounsaturated fat. Eating almonds can lower bad cholesterol, reduce the risk of heart disease, provide protection against cardiovascular disease and diabetes, boost energy, and help prevent gallstones. Whole almonds (with skins) provide the most heart-healthy benefits.

Cashews – Cashews are high in antioxidants and have a lower fat content than most other nuts; additionally, 75 percent of their fat is unsaturated fatty acids. Cashews are also a good source of monounsaturated fats, copper, and a good source of magnesium and phosphorous. Eating cashews promotes good cardiovascular health, even in individuals with diabetes.

Flaxseeds – Flaxseeds, also known as linseeds, are an excellent source of omega-3 fatty acids. Flaxseeds may provide anti-inflammatory benefits, protect your bones, and protect against heart disease, breast cancer, and diabetes. Eating flaxseeds also lowers blood pressure in men with high cholesterol. Flaxseeds are also rich in fiber and manganese and are a good source of folate, vitamin B6 (pyridoxine), magnesium, phosphorous, and copper, and lignan phytonutrients. You’ll need to grind them up first (or purchase ground flaxseed) to gain the most nutritional benefits.

Peanuts – Peanuts are a good source of heart-healthy monosaturated fat, flavonoid (resveratrol), antioxidants, phytosterols, phytic acid (inositol hexaphosphate), and folic acid, making them heart-healthy, a good way to reduce your risk of stroke, and possibly even cancer. Peanuts are also a good source of vitamin B3 (niacin), folate, copper, manganese, and protein, and are a significant source of resveratrol, a chemical studied for potential anti-aging effects.. Peanuts and peanut butter may also help prevent gallstones and protect against Alzheimer’s disease. It wise to ensure that peanuts, especially raw ones, are stored in a cool, dry, environment (such as a refrigerator or freezer), as an extremely toxic and highly dangerous fungus (aflatoxin) can easily grow on peanuts when the temperature is between 86-96°F (30-36°C) and humidity is high.

Sesame seeds – Sesame seeds and tahini are rich in beneficial minerals. Not only are sesame seeds a very good source of manganese and copper, but they are also a good source of calcium, magnesium, iron, phosphorous, vitamin B1 (thiamin), zinc, dietary fiber, and healthy (monosaturated) fats. They contain powerful antioxidants called lignans, which are also anti-carcinogenic. They also contain phytosterols, which block cholesterol production. Sesame contains one lignan unique to it called sesamin. Eating sesame seeds may help lower cholesterol, provide relief for rheumatoid arthritis, and support vascular and respiratory health. The nutrients of sesame seeds are better absorbed if they are ground or pulverized before consumption.

Sunflower seeds – Eating sunflower seeds may help provide anti-inflammatory and cardiovascular benefits, lower cholesterol, and prevent cancer. Sunflower seeds are an excellent source of vitamin E. Sunflower seeds are also an excellent source of linoleic acid (an essential fatty acid), dietary fiber, protein, and minerals such as magnesium and selenium, and are high in cholesterol-lowering phytosterols.

Walnuts – Walnuts are an excellent source of omega-3 essential fatty acids. Walnuts are also a good source of manganese, and copper. Walnuts are also an important source of healthy (monounsaturated) fats. Eating walnuts may benefit your cardiovascular system, improve cholesterol in individuals with type 2 diabetes, help brain functions, protect bone health, and help prevent gallstones. Walnuts also have bio-available melatonin, which helps regulate sleep. A new study published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology (Oct. 17, 2006) found that eating walnuts after a meal high in unhealthy fats can reduce the damaging effects of such fats on blood vessels. Walnuts also contain l-arginine, which is an essential amino acid that the body uses to produce nitric oxide, necessary for keeping blood vessels flexible.

To Soak or Not to Soak... Although eating nuts and seeds, even when roasted, can be very healthy, it may be beneficial to purchase your nuts and seeds raw and then soak them in clean water for a few hours before eating them. Soaking raw nuts and seeds stimulates the process of germination, which increases the vitamin C, B, and carotenes (pre-vitamin A) content. It may also neutralize phytic acid, a substance present in the bran of all grains and seeds that can inhibit some absorption of calcium, magnesium, iron, copper, and zinc. Raw nuts and seeds also contain enzyme inhibitors that are neutralized by germination. If you choose to soak your nuts and seeds, please follow these general guidelines:
Getting ready: Use raw, preferably organic, nuts and seeds. Make enough for three days only. Use a glass or stainless steel bowl or jar (plastics may contain toxins). Rinse your nuts or seeds (purified or distilled water is generally preferred).

Soak them: Place your nuts and seeds in in the bowl or jar and then cover it with something breathable, like a towel or pantyhose. Let them soak according to the following schedule (all times approximate).

Almonds, germination time 8 – 12 hours at room temperature
Cashews, whole, germination time 2 – 2 1/2 hours at room temperature
Sesame seeds, germination time 8 hours at room temperature
Sunflower seeds, germination time 2 hours at room temperature
Walnuts, germination time 4 hours at room temperature
All other nuts, germination time 6-24 hours at room temperature Over the course of the soaking, drain and rinse the nuts or seeds two (2) or three (3). Each time you do this, make sure you rinse them until the water drains clear. This is especially important with nuts and seeds that soak for longer amounts of time.
Afterwards: After you’ve soaked them, you may want to do a final rinse with grapefruit seed extract or organic apple cider vinegar, as these can will clean them of bacteria without being absorbed. You now have germinated nuts and seeds! You’re ready to eat them. You can store the leftovers in the refrigerator for up to three (3) days. If the idea of soaking your nuts and seeds seems too time-consuming an endeavor for you, don’t worry””many nutrients cannot be heated out of foods, like protein, vitamin E, and fiber, which are found in ample quantities inside nuts and seeds of all kinds, both cooked and uncooked.

Chia seeds has all amino acids- full protein:
Chia seeds have many benefits, including bolstering energy and endurance, prolonging hydration, helping to maintain blood sugar balance, and even assisting in weight loss. Chia also contains calcium, phosphorous, copper, iron, manganese, magnesium, molybdenum, niacin, and zinc. All of these are essential for the human body to run efficiently.

Omega 3’s

Chia seeds are packed with omega-3s, and they are a great alternative to eating fish for the fatty acid. It will give you the same results without the risk of mercury poisoning or seafood allergies. Omega-3 fatty acids are excellent for cardiovascular health. They decrease abnormal heart rhythms and lower triglyceride levels. They can also help to prevent coronary heart disease.

Antioxidants

Chia seeds also have a large number of antioxidants. They protect your body from free radicals. These antioxidants can help prevent cancer, diabetes, heart disease, and other attacks on the body. Chia seeds have as many or more antioxidants than blueberries, which are considered to be a “superfood.”

The “chia gel” also forms a block:
The “chia gel” also forms a block between carbohydrates and enzymes in the body, so the conversion of carbohydrates takes longer and energy is released steadily, allowing for better endurance.
How Do I Use Chia Seed? The “chia gel” can add a great nutritional punch to porridges, puddings, and liquids of any kind while the chia seeds are great for baked goods including breads, cakes, and biscuits. Chia seeds also tend to “bulk” up food, displace calories, and add “good fat” – all without changing the flavor of the food. Chia seed adds a wealth of nutrients to liquids without excess calories, making it a great easy, healthy meal replacement for those that are also watching their weight. Add chia seed to your favorite protein shake or water bottle before your next workout, and see just how far your body is willing to take you when it’s operating on chia seed.

Buckwheat (a few people are allergic to it) is a complete protein

Seed and withered flower of buckwheat

Despite the common name and the grain-like use of the crop, buckwheat is not a cereal or grass. The grain is called a pseudocereal to emphasize that the plant is not related to wheat.Buckwheat plants grow quickly, beginning to produce seed in about 6 weeks and ripening at 10 to 11 weeks. They grow 30 to 50  inches (75 to 125 cm) tall.
Buckwheat is raised for grain where a short season is available. In Japan, 100% pure Buckwheat Soba is called ‘kiko uchi’.  (Some labels include wheat in making Soba noodles, so read the label). Eden Buckwheat noodles are 100% buckwheat. Buckwheat protein is superior to other cereal grain as it has all essential amino acids and is the best source of the important flavonoid rutin.  http://jn.nutrition.org/content/131/6/1850.full
For people who struggle with wheat allergies and gluten intolerance, buckwheat is ideal. It has plenty of protein and B vitamins and is rich in phosphorus, potassium, iron, and calcium.

Health-minded eaters are increasingly interested in fiber, the indigestible residue from plant foods. One cup of buckwheat kasha kernels provides over 20% of dietary fiber.Because buckwheat’s outer hull is very hard, and doesn’t soften with long cooking, it must be removed during processing – unlike wheat which has a soft outer hull. Dark buckwheat flour contains some particles of finely milled hulls; excessive amounts of hulls create bitterness.
Shop in the USA:  http://thebirkettmills.com/shop for buckwheat products

Starch
71-78% in groats
70-91% in different types of flour
Starch is 25% amylose and 75% amylopectin.
Depending on hydrothermal treatment, buckwheat groats contain 7-37% of resistant starch. Proteins
Crude protein is 18%, with biological values above 90%[16] This can be explained by a high concentration of all essential amino acids,[17] especially lysine, threonine, tryptophan, and the sulphur-containing amino acids.[18] Minerals
Rich in iron (60-100 ppm), zinc (20-30 ppm) and selenium [20] Antioxidants
10-200 ppm of rutin and 0.1-2% of tannins

Medicinal uses

Buckwheat contains a glucoside called rutin, a phytochemical that strengthens capillary walls. One clinical study showed mixed results in the treatment of chronic venous insufficiency.Dried buckwheat leaves for tea were manufactured in Europe under the brand name “Fagorutin”.

Buckwheat contains D-chiro-inositol, a component of the secondary messenger pathway for insulin signal transduction found to be deficient in Type II diabetes and polycystic ovary syndrome. It is being studied for use in treating Type II diabetes.
Research on D-chiro-inositol and PCOS has shown promising results.

A buckwheat protein has been found to bind cholesterol tightly. It is being studied for reducing plasma cholesterol in people with hyperlipidemia.

Dust off that SuperHuman Brain of yours! It’s in there.

I received this email and got excited about it because I KNOW that this technique is successful for me and so many other people.

I will listen to the conference and put my recordings below.

If you don’t have  your superhuman strength yet, then hold tight to your intention. It is a reality.

Hi Maryann,

If you’re like me you probably think way
too much.

What has to get done at work?  How can I
better take care of my health?  What should
I eat for lunch? What should I do this
weekend?  How am I going to pay that bill?

There is always so much going on in our
brains!

And it seems like each issue is fighting
for mental space all the time.

Even as you’re reading this, your brain is
probably racing at a million miles a minute.

It’s tiresome, right?

It’s also likely holding you back…

What if you could just make it stop and learn
to better focus on the things that matter?

How much could you get done?

Imagine for a minute having monk-like
concentration, superhuman memory and
overflowing creativity?

It’s a lot easier than you think.

As my good friend Jim Kwik always likes to say,
“You have a superhero hiding inside of you just
waiting to come out…”

You just have to get your brain under control.

Here’s something that will help you do just that.
It’s free, but there’s only a little space left.

www.thetappingsolution.com/super-brain

My friend Jim Kwik is a memory and
concentration expert.

He’s so good that he’s taught the best minds
at Harvard and Nike how to speed read and
remember anything.

He wants to help you unlock the superpowers
you’ve always known you had.

During Jim’s new “Brainpower for Success
Summit”, 12 leading experts and
super-achievers will be sharing how they’ve
turned their brains into uncanny machines.

They’ll teach you how to:

– Break free of your crippling Facebook addiction

– Never forget the name of another person you meet

– Master your dream skill or hobby and reap super-profits from it

– Double your learning speed and capacity

– Cut your stress in half or eliminate it altogether

– Teach your children laser-like focus and concentration

By the end of this summit, you’ll be unstoppable.

www.thetappingsolution.com/super-brain

Enjoy the summit.  I know I will.  🙂

Keep Tapping,

Nick Ortner

When your brain is balanced and relaxed, your body will follow.

So often, I find people is a form of stress that creates symptoms of scatteredness and disarray in their lives.  They are busy but don’t seem to get anything done.  My hand is raised because I know I have that quality.  I found out through my studies that this is a form of sympathetic stress.   It is a form of fight or flight that revolves around an injury.

In Oriental medicine, the core of that injury is cold, yet around it lots of heat, activity and flurry.  The action is intended to get the person to safety.  It is a scramble.  The habit or the training might create an inhibition to move.  This sometimes comes from parents who hold their children down and yell at them in some form or another.  Too much threat and not enough ability to defend.  At any rate, it is essential to get ourselves out of it in order to bring our lives and health into balance.

Here are some big tips I am learning right now.

We know about the reptilian brain, how it is reactive and not cognitive.  We know that the reptilian brain is also known as the Autonomic Nervous System.   This is the right place to think about this exercise!  We know that smell and the use of essential oils will sooth the reptilian brain.  We also know that tapping, asking for Grace and Light will accelerate the change of these deep habits.

Here is what I found out that is new to me and VERY EXCITING.  We know that the body scans the consciousness.  If you hold a state of unhappiness and your consciousness scans you a million times per day, that’s a lot of feedback about unhappiness.  That is how NLP really works.  We have to break the signals that are getting scanned to really change our consciousness.  If we want to be happy, we need to feed ourselves a happy lot of energy, smile and begin the cycle of happy.  Same with being healthy, having more money, and having the strength to determine the outcomes around you.  Yes, it all takes energy AND you can get a grip on the direction you are going by putting yourself in the proper position to get scanned as much as you can until the result starts to change.  So pull out your rating antennae so you can tell if you are changing.

Here is the exercise de jour to release the reptilian brain habits and messages.  This is one of the most difficult parts of us to realign because we operate cognitively, this is reflex.

I received an email and downloaded a free book from amazon.

Here is the book link.        http://reflexercise.net/

For those who have excuses . . . I will give you some basics out of the book but I believe that reading the book and absorbing the explanation is worth your time!!!   It is well written and deserves the chance to set into your consciousness.   Here we go.

This is a youtube on what it looks like before and after in the places that want to “run away”, however it is not a video about the technique.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sEJJwOs8Ybk

Here is a few of the pages that will help you build your technique.  This is what I want you to study!!

5 Ways to Protect from Radiation

Radiation is comprised of lots of tiny particles that emit gamma rays, etc. and burn like being hit by very tiny fires.
To some extent, a strong body can endure! So how can  we be our strongest so that we can endure levels of radiation?

1. The thyroid is a shield that protects us. To keep your thyroid safe, keep yourself and your environment charged with healthy energy.  In this case, “healthy” can be defined as  being charged with negative ions. Negative ions are created  naturally by ocean waves, water falls and rain storms where water sheers the air. There are also mechanical generators as Living Air ionizers. We want to keep the stress off of the thyroid as much as possible by keeping ourselves filled with healthy energy and spend less time in front of our favorite monitor or TV screen.

2. The radiation takes away our ability to respond. We can protect our response function by giving the body, mind and emotions what they need to feel like they are ready for anything. What do you need . . . to always be at your best?

  • lots of water
  • minerals to keep the connections moving
  • vitamins for raw materials to make what is needed
  • oils for lubrication of the moving parts
  • eliminate foods that are hard to digest
  • a good night’s sleep (to sleep by 10PM)
  • exercise (20 minutes of sweating)
  • simplifying life to remove stress
  • peace of mind

3. Grounding. Radiation is directly related to the planet. Gathering your resources from the ground and using the earth’s polarity to push off sress and radiation are key.   Spend at least 15 minutes per day grounding yourself by:

  • Being barefoot on the earth
  • Eating lots of protein
  • Wading or swimming in a natural body of water
  • Planting hands or feet into the dirt like gardening
  • Using copper wire from your skin into the earth.

4. Some of you are looking for enhancers for the body specifically for radiation. Not all of these options are right for everyone so find out what is right for you or ask us to help you.

  • Gensing – helps to regulate the radiation
  • Kelp – is bio-available iodine
  • Fulvic Acid
  • Mega Hydrate
  • Zeolite
  • Chlorella – 40% more chlorophyll
  • ashwagandha – helps with stress of oxidation.
  • Sea salt is very helpful to detox
  • Salty Miso
  • Reshie Mushroom
  • Hi doses of vit C (bowel tolerance)
  • Selenium – almonds & brazil nuts
  • magnesium – (calms)
  • coconut cream and products – like cream cheese.

5. Why is everyone talking about potassium iodine? Iodine is used by the body and particularly by the thyroid. Depletion is considered an emergency by your body. Here is how to tell if you need iodine.

  1. Take a bottle of Iodine and stain the skin on your wrist for a few seconds until you have a deep yellow stain.
  2. Time the number of hours it takes for the stain to be absorbed into the skin. (you can wash)
    1. 0 -1.5 hours = emergency
    2. 1.5 – 6 hours = severe depletion
    3. 6 – 18 hours = depleted
    4. 18-24 hours = requires vigilance and action
    5. 24+ hours = adequate
  3. Most people have some level of deficiency. The treatment and the diagnosis are the same. You can continue to stain your skin until your levels are high.
  4. Wait a week and test again.

Radiation Detection Map
Find out for yourself if there is elevated radiation in your area. The power of the internet is that civilians can report independently with their personal equipment. Locate your area on this map.

Even if there is no direct fall-out in your area, particles can be carried on clothing, shoes, upper atmosphere and aircraft.

Everyone is different. We custom build programs to build strong and confident bodies that are able to handle every day stress.  Build your sweet new body and go for a test drive today. Call for an appointment at 760-943-8044 or sign up here.

Good Fats Don’t Make You Fat

There is a great deal of misperception or misconception regarding fats and oils.  All fats are good for you – they just come from different families and have different purposes. The three families of fat are:

  • Saturated Fat
  • Mono Unsaturated Fat
  • Poly Unsaturated Fat.

The difference is the number of bends in the chain. Saturated Fats have no bends in the chain, whereas, mono unsaturated fats have one bend and the poly unsaturated fats have multiple bends. The more the bends, the greater the electrical energy and the greater the vibrational energy.
Saturated fats are used for body structure and stability, while the polyunsaturated fats are used for functioning organs, such as the eyes and the heart, which require more electrical energy and vibrational energy to function. In nature fats come from nuts, seeds, olives, avocados, dark greens, coconuts, seaweed, leagumes, butter, flaxseed.
Saturated Fats
Saturated fat does not require liver bile for digestion because it is easy to digest and absorbs quickly. All cooking should be done with a saturated fat because the size of the chain makes it difficult to damage the fat. The coconut is 92% saturated fat and is considered the best and healthiest oil to cook with. Olive oil should NOT be used for cooking, because the chain is short and can be damaged so easily that it can turn rancid during the cooking process. Saturated fat helps fight disease by:
Killing parasites
Killing viruses
Killing Bacteria
Poly Unsaturated Fats
Poly Unsaturated fats speed up the functioning of the brain, the heart and the eyes. The brain gets its share first while the rest of the body may be starving for the fats. There are only two things that can leach fat from the brain and they are alcohol or a fetus, especially during the 3rd trimester of pregnancy.
Prostaglandins
Prostaglandins are made from Omega 3’s and Omega 6’s.  We need both 3’s and 6’s in roughly equal amounts to maintain balance.  Unfortunately, in the American processed food diet, there are far too many Omega 6’s – these are the ones that promote inflamation.   The imbalance between Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids may also contribute to obesity, depression, dyslexia, hyperactivity and even a tendency toward violence
Fat is mandatory for good health
Your heart won’t run without fat, and 60% of your heart’s energy comes from fat.
The brain is made up of 60% fat and you can’t think properly with out fat.
Nerves – the protection around your nerve is a sheath called the mylein sheath. Fat is the primary component of the mylein sheath
Hormones – fat is one of the key building blocks for hormones
Fat is a key building block for your cell membranes Fat is key for healthy skin, hair and nails
Fat is key for proper lung functioning
Fat keeps your moods stable
Fat is critical to a healthy digestive process
Fat is stored in the adipose tissue and is what keeps you warm
Fat is the source for steady and stable energy
Your body has a shut-off mechanism to prevent you from eating too much fat
Most people’s diet is severely lacking in the Omega 3’s. Any health condition a person may have that has a name ending in “itis”, such as arthritis or bursitits or colitis, indicates the person is severely lacking in the Omega 3’s. Omega 3’s come from Fish – especially Salmon and Mackeral, Flax, Walnuts, Algae, Cereal Grasses (Such as PRL’s Green’s Mix), Eggs from organically fed chickens that get flax. Grains have almost no Omega 3’s and a significant amount of Omega 6’s.
No Bad Fats
Technically there are no bad fats – however there are fats that have been damaged, and consequently, they are harmful to you. Fats go bad when chemicals are used or deodorizers are used. When exposed to light they can go rancid.  This is a problem and is why the right kind of package container is important. We recommend the Violite container that can block out the rancidifying light.
The hydrogenation process – the hydrogenation process pumps hydrogen ions into the product at high temperatures so that it stops the rancidifying process to give the product a long shelf life with consistency. The problem is, now the fat becomes waxy, hard and unusable. It is also harmful to the body. Partially hydrogenated is equally as bad and it is called “partially hydrogenated” simply because they stop the process in the middle when the product may have its best eye appeal.  However, it is still equally harmful.
Fats Don’t Make You Fat
It is erroneous to think that fat makes you physically fat. Fats don’t make you fat – eating highly processed foods will make you fat. Eating no-fat or low-fat products will make you fat. Consuming processed sugar makes you fat.  In nature, carbohydrates have protein and fats in them so that when the natural sugar enters the body, it does so slowly due to the protein and fats. Processed sugars have processed the fats and protein out. Now the sugar enters the body far quicker than it was designed to and an array of reactions occur to handle this onslaught, including storing the sugar into fat cells.
Oils
Oils when processed properly will remain cloudy and textured. When oils are manufactured for shelf life and consistency, the oils are damaged, causing them to become transfats; thereby causing them to become toxic and to produce free radicals. They become colorless, odorless and/or tasteless.
Transfats
If the body does not have enough healthy good fats and oils, the body will use transfats. Unfortunately, the body cannot maintain health in this fashion and transfats have been implicated in most all chronic health conditions.
Adverse Effects of Consuming Transfats
Lowers the good cholesterol/Raises the bad cholesterol
Decreases the quality of breast milk
Lowers the male testosterone
Increases the number of abnormal sperm in men Decreases the red blood cell response to insulin thus having an undesireable effect on diabetes
So if a person has been consuming a lot of transfats without the good fats, the damage can still be reversed. Begin to consume properly prepared healthy fats and oils – over enough time, the body with its own intelligence will begin the replacement process. The problem is that it can take years, but by taking a Quantum supplement like Quantum EFA Oil Blend along with Quantum Brain Complex, and adding a 20 minute per day exposure to sunlight, this can be accomplished over a 9 month period.

True Healing

If you want to restore healthy bile flow, what do you do? There are two actions necessary. One is to make different choices, which means eating healthy fats, eating healthy cholesterol, and therefore making healthy bile acids which help digest the fats properly. The other is to look for a substance out there in the world that represents bile flow.

Steiner often described plants as three-fold, flipped-upside-down versions of the human being. The human body has three main areas, the head, the heart and lungs, and the belly or metabolic area where digestion and reproduction take place. Plants are organized in the same way, only flipped upside down. The nerve or head pole of the plant is in the roots, where the plant senses environmental conditions and takes in nutrients; the breathing is in the leaves; and the metabolicreproductive pole is in the flowers.

One plant that stimulates the healthy flow of bile is called Chelidonium major, which has a bilious fluid in the roots. According to what’s called the doctrine of signatures, you can see from the way a plant grows, and from what the plant does differently from other plants, what this plant is telling you. Chelidonium major tells us, “I am the reunification of the stimulation of healthy bile flow.” So you extract the plant, make a preparation, reunite that with the human being and end up with healthy bile flow. Healthy bile flow plus conscious choices about food and how you live, that’s a different kind of healing, true healing that involves reunification and an education of the human being so that his or her life is better. That’s what we’re looking for.

So the job of a doctor is to read the book of nature and to understand what it is that the human being is expressing, where that similar phenomenon is expressed in nature, and then reunify them to create a healing.

Here’s another example. What’s the hallmark of Parkinson’s disease? There’s tremor, shuffling gait and so forth, but these are characteristic of a number of diseases. But there’s one thing about Parkinson’s disease that’s very distinct, very unusual and almost spooky. The essence of Parkinson’s manifests in the face with staring, with a wide-eyed, blank face. Where do you see that in nature? You see it in the octopus, which seems to be all head. The whole thing appears to be a head floating in the ocean with an unblinking eye staring out at you. It looks for all the world like the picture of a Parkinsonian face. The octopus is the picture of Parkinson’s floating in the ocean.

Here’s where it gets interesting. Inside the octopus you find a dark liquid called sepia. They used to use sepia as ink. In fact the US Constitution was written with sepia ink. So you have this picture of a blank staring face secreting a puff of black inky juice which is how it wards off predators so they don’t see it. The site of the pathology in Parkinson’s is in the substantia nigra, which means “black substance.” In the very deep part of the brain there’s a little gland called the substantia nigra which secretes black inky juice. This juice contains dopamine and other neuro-hormones, which supposedly are deficient in the case of Parkinson’s. Like the bile salts, many of these neuro-hormones are made of cholesterol. So in addition to requiring unification with something in the outer world, the Parkinson’s patient also needs to make changes in his or her diet.

Thus we now have a picture of the Parkinson’s patient, who for many years chose a deficient diet, resulting in a lack of neuro-hormone production in the substantia nigra, now needing reunification with a certain kind of octopus right down into its black inky juice. That substance can be supplied with homeopathic sepia, made from black ink from a similar species, the squid. Lifestyle choices are also involved because there are certain environmental poisons, such as agricultural chemicals and trans fats, which specifically target the substantia nigra.

So, we really have a very different concept about what we mean by medicine and what healing is, which is a kind of reunification combined with education about the choices that led you to develop the disease in the first place.

“What I did on my summer vacation.” by Maryann Castellanos

This summer was full of surprises!  They were all “expected”, but the timing!!!  They  ended up being in very close proximity!

I haven’t even had time to write this carefully and add the pictures, etc.  But here is what I got.

Ben and Jaysa got engaged in the end of April!  They set their date for June 22 and later changed it to July 27th and Aug 4 for NC.  ( A good thing too, because Jaysa was still in exams until the last minute and Ben just completed his helicopter instructor’s rating in the nick of time.)

Jaysa and family drove out to accommodate her grandmother’s special needs for her wheelchair and vehicle. Jaysa’s aunt and uncle from Idaho also came to CA with all the kids and the families had lots of fun.

I got to be the Queen, aka, mother of the groom.

My sister Carol came.

As well as Scott and Pearson

Teresa kept an eye on the kitchen and got the details in order.  What fun it was.

My youngest, Mike (19) decided to change his plans from a four year degree to a two year Associates Degree.  Making his graduation magically appear on my schedule for July the 7th!  Richard and I flew in on Thursday and we got to see his place in Brooklyn before we left on Sunday.

It was a wonderful graduation with synchronized serving at the president’s table which was very entertaining.  The food was so wonderful.

We got to meet Sydney and her parents, visit the rose garden at the Roosevelt Mansion (summer home) and many other wonderful treats.

Mike and Sydney had prepared a living space for Mike to start work after graduation.  During these weekend trips in the city, they began to really understand their new life and accepted it.  Sydney changed her plans from going to Charlton to finding a job and living in NYC.  She interviewed and heard back right before graduation.

To help me understand Mike’s job, he showed me a website of the TOP50Restaurants.com.  I expected it to be in the USA, but instead, it was in the world. Of the top 10 that I glanced at,  there was only 1 in the USA and that is where he had his job.  I was a big overwhelmed to realize he made the major league!  Mike assured me that Sydney’s job was just as prominent.  Mike is interning with Daniel Boulud.  Sydney is with Jean-Georges Vongerichten.

Mike found them an apartment and signed a lease in mid august and Sydney starts in the first week of September.    She has been collecting some furniture and she and her parents will be on their way to settle her in the city over Labor Day.

The third surprise is that my dear mother passed away on April 30th, 2012. We had gotten word that she was passing and my brothers met my sister in Sarasota where she had been sick and was at hospice.

I flew in at dinner time and she passed only a few hours later at midnight.  We were there; her two sisters (Marilyn and Hattie) and a daughter of each, (Sue, Karen, and me).  We sat with her and loved her.   At 11:30 the crew began to leave, but I was going to stay over with her.   The girls said their good bys and Marilyn said goodby urging Dot to let go.  That she was done and complete and she go.  We left Marilyn and went into the hall to give them privacy.  Marilyn came out to get us. Her breathing had changed.

The hospice nurse came to evaluate and told us how fortunate we were to be here and that her breathing had changed even more since she had begun observing.  She left us to hold the energy of passing for Dot, letting us know that she would be nearby.

It came to me to sing to her the Prayer of Saint Francis.  She couldn’t talk or open her eyes, but we know she hear us.  She was still, three little tears came out of her eye. Sue had called the others to come, but Dot passed before they got there.  I had talked her through it.  She was protesting internally with Marilyn, that she didn’t like that she wanted her to . . . die.  I re-framed it as not a bad thing.  It was an easy thing.  Like stepping out on a stage where all the people in the audience knew you.  Mom was concerned because she didn’t know what to do!  I suggested (inward conversation) that she just be “herself”.  There was no action or thought needed.  Just be herself.  She did it and slipped from us at that moment.

My brothers and sister, aunts and uncle, and cousin all stayed at my sister’s house in Sarasota, Fl.  Frankly, we weren’t going to sleep any time soon!  We couldn’t get anything done the next day.  It felt like we got hit with a DNA bomb as mom passed and all our current resources were taken out in the blast.  By Tuesday, we came up with a plan to have the funeral on the following Saturday in NJ.  We let people know and made arrangements for those who needed it, so that we could all be present. Then we went our ways until then.

I left Florida by air to NJ.  Mind you it was the first few days of May!!   That is snow bird migration time to go north.  There was a long line of wheel chairs that made me smile because the other side of the flight only had a few!  People from NJ make me smile.

Our NJ service was very memorable with friends, relatives, Dot’s cousins, my cousins, neighbors, etc.  All arriving and sharing in such wonderful fashion.  Somehow, my grandmother who passed in 1977 and the whole “gestalt” was there for me.  All those memories!  Whew.

What was also amazing and wonderful is that all of Dot’s grandchildren were there.  Even those who said they couldn’t come!  Peter came in from China, Caitie and Brian from their exams.  It was amazing!

After the service, we met in NYC for a “good time” which Dot was noted for.  We all went out on a yacht for a brunch cruise to the Statue of Liberty!  What fun to have us all together and what a great finale.  We all left feeling uplifted and satisfied!

Henry, Michael J., Caitie, and Sydney

But wait, there is more. . .

There was still the NC ashes to inter, service at church with the full choir and the cookies and punch in the basement of the church.  All southern style.  We arranged this in August at the same time as Ben and Jaysa’s reception so that I would be there to represent her.

It was wonderful.

Lithium – The Misunderstood Mineral

Lithium – The Misunderstood Mineral

by Dr. Jonathan V. Wright, MD

(Reprinted From “Nutrition and Healing”)

Think young into your 90s with this anti-aging secret for your brain

The biggest problem with lithium treatment is people’s perception of it. Since its most well known use is for bi-polar disorder, lithium sometimes encounters the same stigma as mental illness itself.

I’ve been taking a lithium supplement every day for several years. When I tell people about it, they sometimes get funny looks on their faces and start eyeing the corners of the room for straight jackets. These reactions don’t surprise me, since, as I said, lithium is usually associated with mental illness. But I’ve never suffered from a mental disorder (although certain mainstream medical doctors and possibly a federal agency or two might disagree). Treating manic-depressive (bi-polar) illness is lithium’s most widely known use–but it isn’t an anti-psychotic drug, as many people believe. In fact, lithium isn’t a drug at all. It’s actually a mineral-part of the same family of minerals that includes sodium and potassium.

You might remember reading several editions of Health e-Tips a few months ago that discussed various benefits of lithium. In addition to the benefits mentioned in the e-Tips, like controlling gout and relieving rashes caused by sebhorric dermatitis, lithium also has some great brain-boosting effects. In fact, I’ve reviewed both recent lithium research and the research spanning the past few decades, and I’m convinced that lithium is an anti-aging nutrient for human brains. And there are also some very strong reasons to believe that lithium therapy will slow the progression of serious degenerative mental problems, including Alzheimer’s disease, senile dementia, and Parkinson’s disease.

So there are obviously quite a few “pros” to using lithium, but you’re probably wondering about the “cons.” In the 1930s and ’40s, lithium chloride was sold in stores as a salt substitute. But (as frequently happens) some people used way too much and suffered toxic overdoses, so it fell out of common use. Fortunately, lithium toxicity is entirely preventable, and it’s also easily treatable if it ever does occur — but more about that later. Right now, let’s get into some of the specifics on just how you (and your brain) can benefit from lithium.

Taking (grey) matters into your own hands

Hercule Poirot, Agatha Christie’s famous fictional detective, had an amusing quirk in his incessant concern for his “little grey cells.” I thought of Hercule several years ago when I saw the following headline in an issue of the Lancet: “Lithium-induced increase in human brain grey matter.”

That may not sound like an earth-shattering piece of news, but it actually was quite a major discovery. To that point, medical experts believed that once our brains matured, it was all downhill from then on. Decades of autopsies, x-rays, and, more recently, brain scans have repeatedly shown that brains shrink measurably with aging. But according to their report in the Lancet, Wayne State University (Detroit) researchers found that lithium has the ability to both protect and renew brain cells.1  Eight of 10 individuals who took lithium showed an average 3 percent increase in brain grey matter in just four weeks.

Lithium may help to generate entirely new cells too: Another group of researchers recently reported that lithium also enhances nerve cell DNA replication.2   DNA replication is a first step in the formation of a new cell of any type.

The Wayne State study used high-dose lithium, but I’m certainly not using that amount myself, nor do I recommend it. Prescription quantities of lithium just aren’t necessary for “everyday” brain cell protection and re-growth. Studies done years ago have shown that very low amounts of lithium can also measurably influence brain function for the better.

Protect yourself from brain damage you didn’t even know you had

Aside from boosting brain mass, recent research also shows that lithium can help protect your brain from the “beating” it gets in the course of everyday life. Your brain cells are constantly at risk of damage from exposure to toxins of all sorts-even ones produced by your own body. Toxic molecules are formed naturally during the course of normal brain metabolism.3-7   Since these “normal” toxic molecules (sometimes called “excitotoxins”) are produced every day of your life, eventually they start to wear down or erode away brain mass.

Another well-known cause of brain cell injury is overactivated N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptors. Lithium can inhibit this overactivity.8   And lithium also increases production of a major brain protective protein called “bcl-2″ in both human and animal brain cells.9

So it appears that lithium can protect against normal brain erosion and shrinkage that would otherwise occur over the course of our lives. But lithium also protects the brain from other less “normal” problems too, like damage caused by prescription medications and strokes.

When a clot or other obstruction occurs in a blood vessel serving the brain, it causes a reduction of blood flow to that area. If it’s bad enough, the lack of blood flow will cause a stroke and death of brain cells. (This type of stroke is known as an ischemic stroke.) Research in experimental animals with deliberately induced ischemic strokes has shown that lithium reduces the areas of cell death.10,11

In one of these studies, researchers blocked a brain artery in rats. Some were pre-treated with lithium for 16 days, the rest weren’t. The researchers reported that the lithium-treated rats experienced 56 percent less cell death and significantly fewer neurologic deficits than the control rats.12

And sometimes medications designed to treat other problems end up having a negative impact on the brain. For example, anti-convulsant medications cause abnormal levels of brain cell death. But lithium significantly protects against this type of cell death-so much so that this effect has been called “robust” (a term scientists use to mean “It really works!”).13

In fact, based on its general neuroprotective effect, researchers have recently suggested that “the use of lithium as a neurotrophic/neuroprotective agent should be considered in the long term treatment of mood disorders, irrespective of the ‘primary’ treatment modality being used for the condition.”14    Translation: Lithium should be used along with any patent medicine being used for depression, anxiety, or any other “mood-altering” reason, since it will protect brain cells against their unwanted toxic effects. The researchers didn’t say so, but I will: Any list of “mood altering substances” should include alcohol, tobacco, caffeine, “uppers,” “downers,” and-for those who do inhale-marijuana. Harmless as some of them might seem, these substances can cause brain damage with medium to long-term abuse.

Keeping your brain’s lines of communication open -and healthy

Scientists determine how healthy brain cells are by measuring levels of a molecule called N-acetyl-aspartate (NAA).   A decrease in NAA is thought to reflect decreased nerve cell viability, decreased function, or even nerve cell loss.15 In a study of 19 research volunteers given four weeks of lithium, 14 experienced a significant increase in NAA, one had no change, and four had a small decrease.16

Now, what about the interaction between those new, protected, healthy brain cells? Communication between brain cells and networks of brain cells is called “signaling.” And lithium is actually necessary for at least two signal-carrying pathways.17   Researchers have also reported that lithium may help to repair abnormally functioning signaling pathways in critical areas of the brain.18

Lithium and Alzheimer’s: New hope for a “hopeless” situation

As you know, there’s no cure for Alzheimer’s disease and there’s very little available for patients (and families) that can offer even partial relief from the turmoil it causes.   So when new treatments are developed or discovered, it’s usually big news -a ray of hope for people stuck in a seemingly hopeless situation. One of these newly developed patent medications, called Memantine,(tm) was recently approved in Europe. Even though it’s not officially “approved” in this country (yet), thousands of people are already importing Memantine to the U.S. via various Internet sources. But why go through all the trouble (not to mention risk) of getting and using this new patent formula? Apparently, it “works” by protecting brain cells against damage caused by a major excitotoxin, glutamate. But protecting against glutamate-induced nerve cell damage is also one of the well-known actions of lithium. So if it’s true that this newly approved patent medication slows the progress of Alzheimer’s disease in this way, then lithium should slow Alzheimer’s disease progression, too. Of course, lithium treatment, which isn’t patentable and doesn’t have nearly the profit potential of patented Alzheimers medications, hasn’t made any headlines. But that doesn’t mean it isn’t a promising option for patients struggling with Alzheimer’s disease.

There are many other research findings that also strongly suggest that lithium will protect against potential Alzheimer’s disease and slow the progression of existing cases. Researchers have reported that lithium inhibits beta-amyloid secretion, and also prevents damage caused by beta-amyloid protein once it’s been formed.20-23 Beta-amyloid peptide is a signature protein involved in Alzheimer’s disease: the more beta-amyloid protein, the worse the Alzheimer’s becomes.

Overactivation of a brain cell protein called tau protein also contributes to neuronal degeneration in Alzheimer’s disease, as does the formation of neurofibrillary tangles Lithium inhibits both of these nerve-cell damaging problems.24,25

And you’ve likely read that individuals with Alzheimer’s disease usually have excess aluminum accumulation in brain cells. While it’s not yet known whether this excess aluminum is a cause, an effect, or just coincidental, most health-conscious individuals take precautions to avoid ingesting aluminum. Unfortunately, it’s impossible to completely avoid all aluminum, since it’s naturally present in nearly all foods. But lithium can help protect your brain against aluminum by helping to “chelate” it so that it can be more easily removed from the body.25

Although Alzheimer’s disease and senile dementia aren’t technically the same, they do share many of the same degenerative features so there’s every reason to expect that lithium will help prevent or slow the progression of senile dementia too.

A younger, healthier brain with just one small dose a day

As I mentioned earlier, some of these studies used rather high doses of lithium. And in some instances, as in the case of manic depression, doses as high as 90 to 180 milligrams of elemental lithium from 900 to 1800 milligrams of lithium carbonate are necessary. Quantities of lithium in that range must be monitored closely to guard against overdose and toxicity.

But you really don’t need large amounts to improve your “every-day” brain function. Studies have repeatedly shown that substantially lower amounts of lithium can significantly improve brain function (as reflected in behavior).

The amounts of lithium I recommend for brain anti-aging range from 10 to 20 milligrams (from lithium aspartate or lithium orotate) daily. I’ve actually been recommending these amounts since the 1970s. At first I was exceptionally cautious and asked all of my patients taking lithium to have regular “lithium level” blood tests and thyroid function tests. After a year or so, I quit asking for the lithium level blood tests, since 100 percent of them came back very low. Another year after that, I stopped requesting routine thyroid function tests, too, only doing one when I was suspicious of a potential problem. In the 30 years since, I’ve rarely found one.

Protect your brain starting today–no prescription necessary

High-dose lithium is available only by prescription. But low-dose lithium (capsules or tablets containing 5 milligrams of lithium from lithium aspartate or lithium orotate) is available from a few natural food stores and compounding pharmacies.

If you’re interested in keeping your brain as young as possible for as long as possible, you should definitely consider lithium therapy. Review this information with your physician…but make sure he is skilled and knowledgeable in nutritional and natural medicine!

A sneak peek at even more lithium secrets

In Part 2, I’ll review lithium’s many other effects-from preventing anorexia to relieving cluster headaches, to lowering blood sugar (and that’s just to name a few!). I think you’ll be surprised at just how versatile this misunderstood mineral can be.

In the meantime, if you’d like to read the Health e-Tips on lithium (or to sign up to begin receiving these free e-mail updates), visit the Nutrition & Healing website at www.wrightnewsletter.com.

Part 2     Lithium fights crime and some of your most nagging health concerns

Turns out it’s not only the strict use of the death penalty lowering crime rates in some areas of Texas. And while I’m sure “Dubya” would be quick to take credit, it’s not stricter laws or changes in sentencing guidelines either. Using 10 years of data accumulated from 27 Texas counties, researchers found that the incidence of homicide, rape, burglary, and suicide, as well as other crimes and drug use, were significantly lower in counties whose drinking water supplies contained 70-170 micrograms of lithium per liter than those with little or no lithium in their water.

The researchers wrote: “These results suggest that lithium at low dosage levels has a generally beneficial effect on human behavior…increasing the human lithium intakes by supplementation, or the lithiation [adding lithium] of drinking water is suggested as a possible means of crime, suicide, and drug-dependency reduction at the individual and community level.”

And that’s not to mention all of the lithium health benefits we went over in Part 1: It may be useful in treating Alzheimer’s disease, senile dementia, and possibly Parkinson’s disease. Lithium not only protects brain cells against normal wear and tear, but also offers additional protection against a whole variety of toxic molecules, including patent medications. It can also promote brain cell regeneration and increase brain cell mass. In essence, the research suggests that lithium is a brain anti-aging nutrient.

All of these results are every bit as good as (if not better than) the data that led to dumping toxic waste (fluoride) into so many public water supplies. So why haven’t public health and safety “authorities” been pushing for further intensive research on water-borne lithium and criminal behavior?

I’m certainly not in favor of the government adding anything to pure drinking water. But if it insists on forcibly mass-medicating us through our water supply (a thoroughly un-American concept I’m 100 percent against no matter what the added substance is), why haven’t they considered adding something that might actually do some real good for people’s health and safety? Isn’t the possibility of reducing homicide, suicide, rape, robbery, burglary, theft, mental hospital admissions, and drug addiction related arrests just as important as the possibly of preventing tooth decay?

Call me pessimistic, but I suspect lithium is still being ignored because no huge, politically connected industry has enormous quantities of lithium-containing waste lying around. (In the 1940s, that’s exactly how water fluoridation began, by using up huge quantities of fluoride-containing toxic waste generated by the politically connected aluminum industry.)

But if there’s one thing we all know about the U.S. government, it’s that we shouldn’t wait for the people running it to do anything to help us, especially when we can help ourselves. So today let’s go over a few more of lithium’s benefits and I’ll tell you how you can help yourself to this valuable mineral right now.

Lithium tackles another addiction

In 30 years of nutritionally oriented practice, I’ve been told by many alcoholics and their relatives that low-dose lithium can be very helpful for both alcoholism and associated mood disorders. For “practicing” alcoholics, I recommend a trial of lithium orotate, 10 milligrams three times daily (along with diet advice, niacin, glutamine, and other supplements). I ask recovering alcoholics to try 5 milligrams, three times daily (occasionally more). The majority of these patients report improved mood and decreased desire for alcohol after about six weeks using lithium therapy.

According to one review article in the British Journal of Addiction, “both controlled and uncontrolled experiments show that symptoms of both alcoholism and affective disturbance are reduced in patients treated with lithium.”2 (All of the studies reviewed used high dose prescription lithium.)

I also often recommend direct blood relatives of alcoholics (parents, children, or siblings) consider a trial of lithium orotate, 5 milligrams two or three times daily, even if they have never noticed a mood problem. I explain that this is a “personal clinical trial,” and a safe one, that they can discontinue in six to eight weeks if they don’t feel a difference. I also ask that the individual discuss this personal clinical trial with their husband, wife, or other close household member, since I’ve found that the individual doesn’t always notice subtle (or even not-so-subtle) mood changes in himself. But immediate family members notice-particularly when the changes are for the better! I haven’t kept a count of exactly how many individuals have tried this approach over the last 30 years, but it’s probably somewhere in the vicinity of 300 to 400-maybe more. And the majority report positive changes: less depression and irritability for women, and less irritability and “temper” for men.

Can lithium help solve your health mysteries?

So far, you’ve read about how lithium can help combat mental illness, mood disorders, and chemical dependency. All of these benefits, in turn, help communities become safer places overall by reducing rates of violent crime. And, yes, increased safety does benefit you and me. But right now, let’s discuss some ways that you might be able to put lithium to work in your own life with some surprising applications for a few rather “mysterious” conditions.

By “mysterious,” I don’t mean brand-new, mutated viruses like the recent outbreak of SARS. No, the conditions I’ll go over today have been around for quite a while. But the mystery lies in the fact they each of them is still considered “incurable.” Let’s start with one of the most painful.

Fibromyalgia relief: This “last resort” could rank No. 1

This condition primarily strikes women and causes debilitating pain and stiffness. Lithium can help alleviate these symptoms without the problems associated with conventional fibromyalgia treatments, which include tranquilizer, antidepressant, and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications (which only temporarily mask the pain and sleeplessness that often occur).

One study examined three women suffering from fibromyalgia, none of whom had responded to conventional treatment. When researchers added lithium to the women’s current treatment, all three noticed a marked reduction in their symptoms.3

The authors of the study didn’t explain why they didn’t have the women discontinue their ineffective conventional treatments, but I’ve got a pretty good idea that their motives might have had something to do with the fact that the conventional treatments, as useless as they were for these women, are the “standard” protocol.

But I digress.

The gout-eliminating combination that tastes as good as it feels

You might remember reading the Health e-Tip on lithium and gout several months ago (2/3/03, subject line: “Help! My big toe is on fire!”). As the e-Tip mentioned, gout occurs when the body can’t process and eliminate excess uric acid. The result is a painful burning or stabbing sensation usually in the ball joint of the foot.

Although there are no published studies on this topic, over the years I’ve found the combination of low-dose lithium (10-15 milligrams twice daily) and vitamin C (2 grams twice daily) can be very effective in preventing recurrent attacks of gout. Vitamin C significantly reduces serum uric acid levels. Lithium makes uric acid more soluble so it doesn’t crystallize into painful “needles.” These two actions combine to significantly reduce gout attacks. If you have gout, I also recommend that you drink 32 oz. of cherry juice at the first sign of an attack. Just please make sure it’s real cherry juice–no sugar added. Although no one is sure why or how it works, studies have shown that cherry juice usually eliminates the pain of acute gout.

85 percent cluster headache relief in just two weeks

Cluster headaches are another one of those inexplicable conditions that my patients tell me always seem to come on at exactly the wrong time. In fact, they might actually be one of the most “mysterious” of the conditions I’ve listed so far since, like fibromyalgia, the cause isn’t known. They tend to attack relentlessly for weeks to months and then often go into remission for months or even years. But lithium (in relatively high doses) can significantly reduce both the severity and frequency.

One study examined lithium’s effects on 19 men with cluster headaches. Eight had rapid improvement-an average 85 percent reduction-in their “headache index” in just two weeks. Four individuals had both cluster headaches and psychiatric symptoms; these four had almost complete elimination of their headaches. The remaining seven had only a slight benefit.5

Another research group tried lithium therapy (again, relatively high quantities) for 14 individuals with cluster headaches. Five individuals had complete disappearance of their headaches, four had significant improvement, and four had no change.6

There’s no guarantee that lithium will cure your cluster headaches, but there is a good chance that it might help. With so few other options available, it’s at least worth a try.

Simple relief from those annoyingly persistent problems

Along the same lines as these mysterious conditions are a few other conditions that lithium can benefit. But these are less on the mysterious side and more in the vein of annoyingly persistent. Even so, lithium can still help in a number of ways.

One research group reported that lithium inhibits the reproduction of several viruses, including herpes simplex viruses (HSV 1, HSV 2), adenovirus (the “common cold” virus), cytomegalovirus, Epstein-Barr virus (associated with mononucleosis and many cases of chronic fatigue), and the measles virus.7

Another randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study of lithium carbonate (doses ranging from 150-900 milligrams daily) demonstrated “a consistent reduction in the number of herpes episodes per month, the average duration of each episode, the total number of infection days per month, and the maximum symptom severity. In contrast, treatment with placebo resulted in an increase in three of the four severity measures.”8

In addition to lithium, selenium, lysine, and other nutrients can also help suppress the reproduction of herpes simplex (and other viruses) and speed the recovery process should an active infection occur. I tend to think it’s better-and safer-to follow this approach (using small quantities of several effective nutrients rather than a larger quantity of just one), so nearly 10 years ago I worked with Bio-Tech Pharmacal to create a useful anti-herpes formula. We combined low-dose lithium with selenium, lysine, vitamin C, olive leaf extract, and other nutrients into two formulas, one (called HPX) for prevention of herpes simplex, and the other (called HPX2) for treatment of outbreaks. Those who have used it tell me it does the job, cutting down or eliminating recurrent herpes infections and/or helping them heal more quickly when they do occur. HPX and HPX2 are both available through natural food stores and compounding pharmacies.

A quick end to a Grave disease

Hyperthyroidism can be persistent and difficult to treat. It comes on either very suddenly or very gradually-so gradually, you might not even notice that something is really wrong until the symptoms become severe. Graves’ disease is one of the common names for hyperthyroidism. In this condition, the immune system disrupts the functioning of the thyroid gland, causing it to become enlarged and to secrete too much hormone.

Mainstream treatments completely shut down the production of thyroid hormone using dangerous patent medicines. But lithium can get to the root of the problem much more safely.

In 1972, Mayo Clinic researchers published the first clinical investigation of lithium treatment for Graves’ disease.9   Using high-dose lithium for 10 individuals, they reported that thyroid hormone levels fell by 20-30 percent within five days.

Twenty-six years later, in a review of more than 10 successful trials of lithium therapy for Graves’ disease, the authors wrote: “a small number of studies have documented its [lithium’s] use in the treatment of patients with Graves’ disease… it’s efficacy and utility as an alternative anti-thyroid [treatment] are not widely recognized…”10 They also note lithium’s rapid effect: “Lithium normalizes [thyroid hormone] levels in one to two weeks…” But they also caution that “toxicity precludes its use as a first-line or long-term therapeutic agent.” If they’d just added flaxseed oil and vitamin E to their treatment, they would have basically eliminated the risk of toxicity.

Lithium’s benefits: Ripe for the picking

Perhaps the budding evidence about lithium and brain protection will spark even more interest in researching this mineral. Maybe researchers will accumulate enough evidence to prove that lithium can slow or even reverse brain aging. And perhaps researchers will conclude that putting very low dose lithium into drinking water to reduce violent crime is even more important than adding fluoride to prevent tooth decay.

But I won’t hold my breath. Lithium isn’t patentable, so I doubt that patent-medicine companies will even consider funneling huge amounts of research dollars into it. And if the patent-medicine companies aren’t interested in it, it isn’t likely to be “approved” for these or other uses any time soon. But remember, “approval” does not ensure safety or effectiveness; it just means that procedures have been followed, forms have been filled out, and money-lots and lots of money-has changed hands.

Now for the good news: Just because lithium won’t be formulated into the next wonder drug and isn’t likely to be making the headlines of your local news, that certainly doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy all of its benefits-from brain anti-aging to headache relief–right now. Low-dose lithium supplements are available in some natural food stores.

If you decide to give lithium a try, as with any new treatment or preventive measure (even an all-natural one), it’s always a good idea to consult with a physician skilled and knowledgeable in natural medicine as part of your decision.

New Protein May Protect Against Flu, SDSU Professor Finds

Aired 7/12/12

A professor at San Diego State has made an exciting discovery. She’s found a human-made protein is able to block the flu virus in mice.

Joy Phillips, an assistant professor at SDSU’s Donald P. Shiley BioScience Center, took a human-made protein that previously had been used in studies to make vaccines stronger and decided to test it by itself to see what it would do.

She took mice who had the flu and injected them with the protein, EP67. She found surprising results.

“When you treated mice with EP67, within a 24 hour window of when they got the flu, they didn’t get sick,” she said. “They still had been infected with the virus, so they would be protected from a later infection, but they did not show the normal signs of illness.”

Her team then took it a step further, giving the mice a deadly dose of flu and waiting a full day before treating them.

“Mice that were treated a full day after being infected with a lethal dose of flu were 100 percent protected from death, none of those mice died,” Phillips said. “And they didn’t even look particularly sick.”

They also injected mice with a lethal dose of flu and did not treat them with EP67. When the control mice were dying, Phillips said the EP67 mice “looked great.”

These results suggest an EP67 injection—administered after exposure to the flu—could keep you from getting sick. But, as Phillips is quick to point out, so far her results are only from studies with mice, and there’s a long way to go until EP67 can be tested on humans.

Still, she said, there are several things about her findings that are reasons for excitement.

For one, EP67 is not actually fighting the flu, but instead wakes up the immune system and alerts it to the flu’s presence. Usually when you have the flu, you carry the virus around for a few days before you show any symptoms. During that time, the virus can spread and your immune system hasn’t started working to fight the virus yet.

If EP67 spurs your immune system to action, it could stop you from spreading the virus in those first few days.

Phillips also said the fact that the protein does not directly fight the flu is good news, because it doesn’t give the flu virus a chance to adapt.

“Therapeutics that directly target an organism, those organisms then evolve resistance,” she said. “So if we have something that doesn’t touch the virus at all, there’s no expectation that the virus is going to evolve ways around this.”

Another reason for excitement: the immune system responds in basically the same way, no matter what infection you have. This means EP67 could work not just against the flu, but on a wide variety of viruses, bacteria and fungi.

Phillips said her team already has data showing the protein is protective against bacterial and fungal infections. She said it could even work when the infecting agent isn’t known, like the SARS virus.

But there are many questions that need to be resolved. Phillips said she must confirm that EP67 will work against other strains of flu.

“There’s no reason to expect it won’t, but it still absolutely has to be tested,” she said.

Beyond that, she would like to work with other scientists who study other diseases to see how far EP67’s protective properties spread. And before EP67 can be tested on humans, there is a lot of safety testing that needs to be done.

Because the protein seems to alert the immune system to the flu virus more quickly, another key question is whether an EP67 injection would make you feel sicker faster. But Phillips said that’s tricky to solve.

“That’s hard to answer because it’s mice, and they’re not really forthcoming with how they’re feeling,” she said.

This is Mimi.  Pretty exciting, isn’t it? To find some real help when we are in need of strength to kick off pathogens?  Where can we get this EP67?
